From Microsoft :

What is UEFI?
Applies to Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1

UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is a standard firmware interface for PCs, designed to replace BIOS (basic input/output system). This standard was created by over 140 technology companies as part of the UEFI consortium, including Microsoft. It's designed to improve software interoperability and address limitations of BIOS. Some advantages of UEFI firmware include:

  • Better security by helping to protect the pre-startup—or pre-boot—process against bootkit attacks.

  • Faster startup times and resuming from hibernation.

  • Support for drives larger than 2.2 terabytes (TB).

  • Support for modern, 64-bit firmware device drivers that the system can use to address more than 17.2 billion gigabytes (GB) of memory during startup.

  • Capabililty to use BIOS with UEFI hardware.

Hope this clears it up for you :)

I recently bought Sapphire R9 280x Vapor-x and there is a button with Sapphire logo on it. On the box it says it boots in UEFI mode but i don't know what that means. Can someone explain to me what it does?

this is all that I could find:

UEFI BIOS support

1) Pre-OS and network security: Sapphire HD 7730/UEFI ready products equip the UEFI firmware that is digitally signed and approved by Microsoft for Secure Boot. With Windows 8’s secured boot architecture and its establishment of a root of trust, the customer is protected from malicious code executing in the boot path by ensuring that only signed, certified “known good” code and boot loaders can execute before the operating system itself loads.

2) Faster boot and resume times: When compared to the legacy BIOS, systems with UEFI has a much faster boot and resume time to the OS.

The SAPPHIRE HD 7730 UEFI edition/UEFI ready products  are compatible with motherboards that comply with UEFI Specification 2.3.1 or after. It is also compatible with motherboards that do not have UEFI feature. Motherboards that contain earlier version of UEFI  must be updated to the latest version or have the UEFI option turned off, otherwise, the graphics card will boot in legacy mode, or in some cases, not boot at all. Please refer to your motherboard userguide for BIOS update instruction.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

more or less, don't expect huge performance improvements though ^^ it's a way for the motherboard to tell windows what hardware it has installed so windows doesn't have to check by itself making it a bit faster and the bios is free of any possible interference from the outside so it's 100% safe that the detected parts aren't harmful.
