Does a higher rated surge protector matter?

Is there an actual difference between one rated for 300 joules vs. 800 joules?

I.e. would it matter, or would any surge exceed bother and blow either one...

It really depends on what your using it for. I have a surge protector that failed once to protect my TV system (had to be replaced) but the same surge protecter still works and has protected my PC for years. So to answer your question it really depends on what you want to protect

 eGPU Setup: Macbook Pro 13" 16GB DDR3 RAM, 512GB SSD, i5 3210M, GTX 980 eGPU

New PC: i7-4790k, Corsair H100iGTX, ASrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer, 24GB Ram, 850 EVO 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GTX 1080 Fractal Design R4, EVGA Supernova G2 650W

I'm just thinking, if there's a surge it's more than likely more than both anyway...or not?

Also, dont get an extension cord CLAIMING to also be a surge protector. I recommend the Monster Power line of protectors btw. Get something that looks like an actual surge protector, and has the amount of plugs you need.
