So I have just come into some money and I'm in that 'I want to buy something mentality'. So I currently have have a Msi r7950 Boost OC It's a pretty good card and all but it's a tad on the loud side. So for a while I have been window shoppingg some r9 290's particularly this deal that overclockers Uk has on. It's a

Powercolor Radeon R9 290 PCS+ OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE AMD 8GB 2400MHz Memory Kit

Now it's £300 which is pretty normal for r9 290 but it comes with a free 8gb gamer series 2400mhz kit for free! That's worth like £90 on their site and I could probs sell it on ebay for like £70.

Only problem is power requirements so I have an xfx 550w power supply I made a post asking people if it's enough. Some were like yeah but avoid like benchmarks and others were like meh a lack of power could damage your hardware and... I'm just not comfortable with being on that kind of edge so If I was to buy the r9 290 I would upgrade to a 650w or 750w XFX power supply. Which basically minus the money I get from selling that memory is like I'm paying full price. Now I know the new 8 series cards are coming out next month from nvidia even though I really like amd. which has me wondering If I should wait. I doubt there going to be £300 or at that to match r9 290 performance but maybe they will be more power efficient so that I don't have to upgrade my psu anyway do you think I should  wait or what?

Depending on the rest of your system 550w will be enough. Care to post your specs?

I think you need to get at least 650W, but I'm not a 100% sure. But you should definately buy that card, great deal and great cooler ;)

Here is the problem though case compatibility which sucks. Here is what my case can apparently fit

jCZeCHe.jpg

So it says 290mm cards but as you can see there is a bit of clearance and the whole thing is 300mm I'm probably going to get a ruler and check myself but still. So this card is measured wrong on powercooler site they say the cards dimensions are 266.65mm There is no way in hell it is that size I mean look at this thing

M3uPO5T.jpg

Even on a review site they said that was wrong so here is what I've found just typing in the card and check review sites for dimensions

Link 1 (Fudzilla) says this

The card, including the cooler, measures 295mm x 111mm x 46mm. Note this is longer than the reference design and we advise you to check whether this card fits into your case.

Link 2 (hardware-canucks- This is the review of the 290x version for this card but I doubt it's shorter than the 290)

They say

It’s 11 ¾ (298.45mm)

I just don't know what size this card is I seen someone post on youtube a comment on a video about this card

I don't think they really measured this card at all because the specs are wrong even on the power color website the specs are wrong!...as its real dimensions are 294mm long and 52mm thick!

So what Should I do

That PSU is good it should run the FX + R9 290 just fine even both overclocked man, give it a try and see if it's stable but a friend of mine is running just that and it's been working just fine for a while now.

Although did you see my case post just before yours and yes lol I've already seen that video but r9 290 is more of a power hungry card anyway

in terms of the case I wasn't able to get in their and mesasure cause I couldn't find a rule just a measuring tape but I think the size of this card is pushing it I mean look at these pics I snapped the current card is apperently 261mm

It's defenetly a worthy upgrade IMHO
