I have a relatively simple question. Does the z97 chipset, with a 4690k, support the SteamOS?

I ask because Gigabyte states in it's drivers that Linux support may vary, and that it's basically up to Linux to handle this. I know that SteamOS is based on Linux, so I am wondering if it would work on my current build. Also, if the answer is "no one knows", would/could there be any danger to my hardware if I attempted to run SteamOS on my rig?

There will be no hardware danger of running SteamOS on your rig, and Linux is generally good for drivers, new and old. It should work just fine.

Make a seperate partition for SteamOS and find out. Report back with your findings.  :)

Lol.

So basically, is there any danger at all possible (other than maybe to the storage drive being corrupted or something) from running an operating system on an unsupported chipset? I would assume that it would just fail to launch or whatever, and that the BIOS would protect the hardware and shut the system off.

Also, can SteamOS be run off of something like a flash drive? I know most simple Linux OS's can be.

There is little to no risk of danger to your hardware with trying out linux based distros^^ Just try it and find out :)

I've probably tried over 20 distros on my main rig so far with no problems at all  ^_^

Awesome. So if I have my HDD set up as storage, with my OS on an SSD. How would I go about installing SteamOS onto the HDD without losing the data on there?

Not really mate, i've never had it happen to me before, but if it doesn't support the hardware, it'll most likely just not work properly (like using a dedicated GPU but without drivers installed) .

Windows Disk manager - shrink the partition on it, and make a small space for SteamOS, about ~20gb minimum just to test it etc.
