Hey there o/

So, I'm having a little problem with usb's here and I thought maybe I'd find help here, since I really don't know what's going on.

So, my computer stays in a very obscure part of my house, which is not covered by wifi. I can't change it cause the furniture is fixed, so I can't move it, so, to solve it I bought a usb wifi antenna and used a usb extension to put it in a better place.

In the past I was using 3 generic usb cables to make it long enough, but two of them stopped working and then I needed more. So I went out and bought a new 3 meter cable.

Everything was nice and fluffy, I brought it home and.. nothing.. It was not working with the wifi antenna. I went back to the store and the guy gave me another one and tested to see if it was working. I arrived home again and nothing. but as I knew this cable was working, I decided to give it a few tries.

What I figured out is. The new cable connected to any of the front USB's won't work. When it's plugged in the back (there are 4 usb 3.0 and 2 2.0, It only works with two of the 3.0 and one of the 2.0) it will work for a few seconds and reset the device.

Also I read the thread "Before posting" and updated the driver with the version that was released yesterday, still nothing.

My system:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

CPU: i7 4790k

MOBO: Asus VII Ranger

GPU: Msi R9 290 OC

RAM 4x4 1600mhz GeiL Corsa Enhance

PSU: Cougar GX 1050

If I'm missing any information please let me know and if I can I'll provide ASAP

You can only extend USB for a couple meters before you need an active signal repeater.

do you have any other usb problems?

No, and this problem only happens with the wifi antenna. my pen drive will work with it in any of the usb plugs.

But 3 meters is already too long? I know you can't extend cables forever but thought this was allright.

does this problem happen if you connect it directly

passive usb extenders are very finnicky. consider buying a range extender. (it does not have to be an actual range extender, i set up a cheap R209 ZAR wifi router(about $20 USD) as a range extender.

But it was working before, I want to know what's causing this and try to fix it without spending more money, right now im using a usb hub with 60 cm cable and a usb extension with 1m cable and it works just fine, but I this is still too short and I'd like to be able to position the antenna in a better place.

No, it works fine in any of the usb ports if connected directly.

It depends on the device you're using. Some will stop working after a couple feet, other can work for 5+ meters.

I suggest you invest in a more powerful router or a powerline network rather than extending a USB dongle. It will work much better and you will get way higher speeds.
