Need a new HDD

Go to solution Solved by Boogieman_WD,

Hi Yuval. First to answer your question about the noise reduction of the WD Green - yes it is definitely a significant and noticeable change of the noise levels. Now about the recording, I would recommend that you get a WD Blue or a new WD Black drive (if you need more storage than 1TB). There are a lot of users who say that they record 1080p videos on a WD Green drive and I think if you're running your OS and programs/games from the SSD, that you wouldn't have a problem recording at 1080p, but the Green drive's general purpose is secondary storage. The WD Blue drive runs at 7200RPM and would be suitable for recording 1080p videos. As you probably know the WD Black drives are designed for gaming and thus giving you great performance. You wouldn't have any problems running and recording a game with 1080p, 60fps. About the WD Purple drive - it's a great drive and indeed is up to the task of recording 24/7, but its main purpose is surveillance and I think you don't need to go this way in your case. So in other words if I were you, I would go with either a 1TB Blue drive or a bigger WD Black drive (depending on your storage needs).
Here are a couple of links if you want to take a look at the  features of the drives:

WD Black: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=760
Hope that helps.

I've been using my WD black 500GB for a long time, and soon i will be able to start recording video via shadowplay, so why not upgrade :D

My Initial plan for the HDD i will choose was a WD Green, but the more i think about it a low noise HDD the more it sounds like a advertisement gimmick than something i would notice, and as the drive will be for recording, pretty much most of my time playing, the WD Purple comes in mind, I don't know what makes it better, but it is advertised as suitable for 24/7 recording.

In conclusion, a few questions:

1. My main focus with my build is noise, Would a WD green be noticeably quieter than a ordinary HDD, lets say Seagate barracuda?

2. Will a WD green have any issues while recording at 1080P?

3. Is a WD purple even needed? To me it's sounds overkill to put on of those in my system.

Also a Barracuda HDD is an option, but i rather use a Green over it.

Side note: I do have a 120GB SSD for OS and other stuff.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Greens are 5400RPM hard drives, the only 5400RPM 3.5" drive on the market IIRC.

this is probably the only place i'll hang out anymore: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/274320-the-long-awaited-car-thread/

Current Rig: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, Abit IN9-32MAX nForce 680i board, Galaxy GT610 1GB DDR3 gpu, Cooler Master Mystique 632S Full ATX case, 1 2TB Seagate Barracuda SATA and 1x200gb Maxtor SATA drives, 1 LG SATA DVD drive, Windows 10. All currently runs like shit :D

I do know that, but it's going to be used for storage not OS and similar stuff, for games, movies, recordings etc. Leads to my question if the WD Green have issues recording as it's the slowest drive.

It might take longer to record because it's the slowest.

Wow thanks for the answer, got all the info i need now, I'm not intending to use the drive for anything but recording , the games i will record are stored on my SSD anyway, so the green should not have any trouble. and as the HDD atm is the loudest part in my system (at least on idle) green is the way to go. Not looking for performance rather it doing it's job, and staying cool and quiet :D
