I'm planning a 'bang-for-your-buck' build and would like to know if my parts' choice is decent.

Budget: less than $1100 (AUD)

Orientation: Pro AMD (will not be considering Intel builds)

Use: 40% gaming - 20% photo editing - 50% browsing the web for pictures if cats and gifs of people falling over

PCPartPicker part list: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/4XrqrH
Price breakdown by merchant: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/4XrqrH/by_merchant/

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor  ($130.00 @ Mwave Australia)
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake CLP0605 79.3 CFM CPU Cooler  ($42.78 @ Mwave Australia)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($179.00 @ Mwave Australia)
Memory: Kingston Fury Red Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory  ($99.00 @ Mwave Australia)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($69.00 @ PLE Computers)
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 270 2GB TWIN FROZR Video Card  ($209.00 @ Mwave Australia)
Case: NZXT H230 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($88.00 @ PLE Computers)
Power Supply: Corsair CX 500W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($89.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8 (OEM) (64-bit)  ($109.00 @ Mwave Australia)
Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter  ($44.99 @ Mwave Australia)
Total: $1059.77

I won't be needing the CPU cooler right away because I won't have the games when I have the PC.

And I also won't be needing the wireless card right away.

These subtractions will bring the cost down to $972 (AUD) which is AWESOME

the difference between the 970 and 990 is  crossfire and sli (and a few usb3's), though my msi 970 has them, while true lower 970 boards namely asrock only have a 4+1 vrm most higher end ones from msi asus and gigabyte  do feature 8+2 vrm's, op is purely limited by the lack of choice and still in likelyhood doesnt need to spend 50% more on a board with features he wont use, a simple google search for "amd vrms" will quickly find what boards have a good vrm design,

by staying with the major vendors such as msi, asus, gigabyte, not so much asrock (always seems budget to me), he should be fine. but chances are that hes going to want to overclock if hes going amd, namely the 8320, which is why i suggest the 990fx board. but as you say as long as the power phase is right then theres no problem, generally most 990fx boards are better for this but, if he went for the asus m5a97 or m5a99 board he would be fine i believe

if a company has a board with an 8+2 vrm then thier higher end boards typically use the same vrm, lower end boards might not have a heatsink which means limited overclocking (on par with a heatsinks 4+1) but once you see a giant vrm heatsink tis usually the same vrm design as on higher ones.

in gigabytes case the 970a-ud3p actually has a better vrm design than the 990fx-ud3p ver3 which while being 8+2 only has a small heatsink and can limit max overclocks (4.4ghz+) however this was fixed for ver4 with a HUGE vrm heatsink with a heatpipe going to the chipset heatsink.

i dont know off hand about asus's boards but im guessing its much the same, heck brb just gunna google it..

http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboards-vrm-info-database

the asus boards including the 990fx chipsets have 6+2 vrms the ONLY exceptions being the sabertooth and ROG boards, the rest dont have 8+2 however they are heatsinked and can still be capable of overclocks up to 4+4ghz safely as an estimate (how much you can overclock depends on how much voltage your chip requires to get to a certain speed and therefore the silicon lottery)

so the m5a97 EVO/PRO looks like it could be one to go with if he goes asus, if he can get a gigabyte 970a-ud3p then id highly recommend it because i have it and its a great overclocking board with an easy to learn bios and is dirt cheap, the msi 970 gaming is also good and has a few other features but is hard to come by in some places.

if he can get a good enough board to support it id get an 8320, if not then a cheaper board with a 6300 is possible and even the aforementioned 6+2 vrm board could get a 6300 to high overclocks because it only has 75% of the power draw of an fx8.
