Is there a limit to how large of an SSD you can cache a hard drive? Or a limit to how much you can cache until the quality/performance becomes less noticeable?

I heard that 64gb is the recommended cache size as any higher is useless is this true, as I think it shouldn't be especially if you're looking to cache games.

This might help you

Personally, I think 64 GB is overkill but if you can do it then go ahead.

This is what I would get.

But then a nice normal SSD is only a bit more and why not just save up for that, put your OS on that, and kick it with your new SSD? Do you have a lot of programs you run on your HDD that  load up slow?

I get 60 frames at 1080p on a dual core APU. Ask me how.

I was thinking of that SSD but I don't think the 32gb will be enough

Oh I think it's worth me noting. I am currently fixated on having everything, OS, games, programs, files, everything on a HDD. and then caching that with a large 126gb or more SSD. That way I can have my OS and most used programs on there. And also have some breathing room for games that I want to improve the performance of (decrease loading times, not increase fps)

A larger SSD will also have the advantage of being faster and I don't need to worry about load times of most used programs being slowed every now and then because they were deleted from the cache.

What Im trying to ask is that do you think 64gb is overkill in general? Or just for an OS and programs? Why do you think that?

I am also a programmer (beginner) so imagine I'll want SSD speeds for whatever crazy programs I make (I'm insane sometimes lol) - would rather not hear the dying screams of my HDD ;)

on my old desktop HEEEEL YES!!! lol

My laptop has an SSD and is currently broken. These HDD speeds are murdering me with lava hot knives from the insides!!! Oh and my desktop is slow in general.

i haven't built a pc yet but will want to cache my OS and most used programs but even games to speed up load times. loading games on a HDD can be painful sometimes. That might just be because I have an old Dual core though. Anyways...

your CPU and RAM are going to impact programming more than an SSD. The cache SSDs are not very much cheaper than a regular 120GB SSD. That's why it's a better idea just to buy a regular SSD and then if you must, set it up to cache stuff. But running things on an HDD with an SSD as cache is still going to be slower than running them off an SSD. And game loading does not take that long to load on an HDD. Some multiplayer games might take a minute or 2, but most games won't. I use 2 SSDs with 2 HDDs and my boot times are fast, my caching is fast, and my games are still fast.

i don't have enough money to buy ssds to store games

Hence why I'm opting for caching instead.

I still have a bit more research to do, to decide my storage config btw.

now im thinking of actually having a large ssd 250gb+ for OS and programs and a 2TB HDD for everything else, inc. games. I've been dreading that thought. Wouldn't it cause problems? Such as constantly having to set default download locations and stuff?
