Spec that affects texture rendering?

Go to solution Solved by Manny Calavera,

Hmmm, I would have to say $100 for now unfortunately.  I was thinking about buying a refurbished component like a GPU, or a new mobo once I hit the $200 mark in money saved up. I'd more more ok with a GPU being refurbished than a mobo because I wouldn't be too sure if I'd want to risk that with the motherboard

hold on to your 660 then, come back when you are ready to purchase, because graphic card market change all the time, and new releases will come

Until then, we can check what gpu processors affect texture rendering.

I think this is good explanation.

Hey all,

I was wondering what component of your rig affects the level of texture your pc can render.  I would like to build a custom rig, with the idea of mods in mind, and specifically, those that replaces textures in games with even higher end textures.  For instance, The Witcher 2 with something like Better Texture Environment on NexusMods: http://www.nexusmods.com/witcher2/mods/158/?

I know the GPU obviously has its place, but what for instance would I need to focus on to render (custom or not) high resolution textures at say 60 fps?

Thank you in advance!

basicly this.

something like a r9 290 in crossfire would be most cost effective and chew trough any mods

Oh, ok - so these are like really high end graphic cards?

Texture mapping units

oh yea and vram

You can buy these components separately from the GPU??

TMU or texture mapping units help with higher resolutions

and vram helps save those high resolution for a small time before going to the screen

nono, they are included in the GPU, AMD generally has more (i think)

Hmm, ok.  So it sounds like just the higher end graphic card does the job though, huh..unless I can buy those components separately?  I have never heard of vram and TMU being sold before, but I am completely new to all of this...

Ohhhh, ok

Yeah, maybe my GTX 660 could use an upgrade then.  Also, I can't overclock right now because I have an H77 chipset in my mobo :(

Sweet, thank you!  It is kind of a whole new world for me understanding the ins and outs of that type of information in particular - this looks useful
