5mm SSDs

Go to solution Solved by Flight1sim,

The Crucial M500 might work...

Thats my personal SSD and its great

And its quite easy to open up. (and void the warranty)

So my new laptop only takes 5mm 2.5" SSDs (Inspiron 14 7000). The Plextor M5(S?) seems to fit but there's a bulge in the aluminum bottom panel and I would really like to avoid that. People have talked about stripping a 840 EVO out of its case, but Samsung uses stupid screws and no one's actually done it yet, I think.

Unfortunately there are extremely few 5mm SSDs, most of which are from brands I've never heard of. So far my choices are between the Seagate 600 5mm version and the 1.8" DC S3500. Neither is problem-free, since the Seagate is extremely hard to find, and the DC S3500's use as a datacenter SSD makes its usability in a laptop questionable (not to mention I might have to find a 1.8-2.5 adapter and all the adapters are 7mm, but I suppose I wouldn't need one because the thickness is the same?).

So if you know of other trustworthy 5mm SSDs, feel free to chime in and help me out. Would be much appreciated. Also if any of you own the laptop and have done a mSATA upgrade (which I am not keen on at the moment because it involves digging deep into the laptop), perhaps you could help sway me towards an mSATA drive instead of 1.8" or 2.5".

Any of the Intel ones should do it as you can take off the black piece.

Don't get the DC for a laptop as it may not even work due to the fact that it requires 12v and no laptop drives do.

you mean the SATA + power connector part? Isn't it all one piece?

alright what about the Kingston KC380? it's 1.8" @ 5mm but I can't find any reviews

Take a looks at the 530 there is a black thing on the top that goes around the enirity of the drive. That can be in screwed to make it thinner. That may only make it 7mm though I forget.

oh that's just the 9mm spacer that some notebooks need, the ssd itself is 7mm

I think I'll buy a MX100 and take the cover off, because if im going to void the ssd warranty i may as well make it a cheap and easy one. thanks
