yes. only if you know where they're coming from. they might be mining cards which would have a very short lifespan.

the 290x is almost as powerful as a 780ti, but crossfiring them would be insane

Would the cards have any indication of being mining cards, like off temps or being loud, because I can go look at them and see.

the best way to check would be to only trade PC parts with people you trust.

especially when it comes to AMD cards in 2014

Sometimes it can cause silicon damage and less lifespan there is really no way to tell but if somebody offers a deal like that... ask if they were used for mining most people selling AMD cards in 2014 have been mining.

The only thing you can do is run them through a series of tests to see if they start artifacting (or other issues ensue). Like 3DMark11, Firestrike, Heaven Benchmark 4.0, Valley Benchmark 1.0

Now the thing with mining cards is, they might run through all these tests just fine. You might take them home and precede to use them where they will still be fine. Then out of no where they might start having problems and that could be for all you know four months after doing the trade. Then at that point you're SOL because I doubt the trader is going to take back his broken cards.

Anyway, just using a little common sense it doesn't make sense for someone to willingly trade two 290x for a single 780 Ti. It's less power and more expensive so the trader with the 290x's is taking a loss on two factors; both price and performance. The only thing I can think of which is why the person would do the trade is they aren't pleased with the acoustics of the reference R9 290x's or the heat. Which still can be fixed for much cheaper than taking a huge loss on a trade (aftermarket cooling solutions).

Seems like cagey scenario for me.

YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET THEM AND THEN SELL ON EBAY AND GET ANOTHER 780TI PLUS PROFIT LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! DONT KEEP THEM CAUSE CROSSFIRE 290X IS OP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not really making much profit, reference 290X's go for $250-350 on eBay. Even if he made $350 on both he would only make enough money to buy another 780 Ti.
