Hello one and all, I'm a fairly experienced PC Gamer, but I'm the worst when it comes to PC Maintenance. Last week I noticed my PC temps getting up to about 90 - 95 degrees fairhenheit so I decided to get some thermal paste and re apply it and all that jazz.  So last night I popped my computer open, took the CPU fan off, cleaned the old stuff off with a microfiber cloth and some alcohol and reapplied the stuff.  (I didn't use any well known brand, I used "Insignia Thermal Paste" and I hope thats not the cause of this) Ever since then, the $H#T has hit the fan.  I got on my computer today and the temps apparently reached up to 150 Degrees fairhenheit, I've kept it off virtually all day because of that. But a friend of mine who helped me build my computer said that it's impossible for my chip to get that hot without turning itself off, I dont know the exact name of my chip off hand, all I know is that it's an intel quad core.  If you guys have any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it because as of now my computer is inoperable.

150 F ~= 65 C, that looks fine to me under load. Was that under load or idle?

If the change you made affected the temperature, the change is probably the cause.

Liquid cooling reservior clogged? Oh wait it's a cpu fan then your cpu monitor is not showing accurate temps.

I doubt that any cpu would go 150c so it would be you cpu monitor.

He said 150 F.

Im pretty sure the temp is accurate, I can't even stream netflix without a significant frame drop.

95F is just fine for a Cpu to run at and 150F is fine under load.

Kinda unnecessary

What type of alcohol did you use?

Did you reseat the cpu cooler properly?

Isopropyl alcohol, and I feel like an idiot saying this but I didnt know there was a proper way to reset it.  I turned the computer off, unplugged it, and turned the power system on then went to work.

It was while idol, I was getting 150 F while viewing BIOS after it being off for about 2 hours.

Maybe get your friend to try reseating it for you again? Sometimes there may be a bubble of air trapped underneath it so that it won't work properly. Search for guides (Linus has one in almost every build guide) on how to apply thermal compound :)
