No, Intel's Xeon series performs much worse in gaming than Intel's Core i series. Xeons processors are not designed for gaming.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Question.

Is a Intel Xeon series processor better for gaming than an intel i5?

Especially with games like watch dogs.

This is teh same question as asking if an i7 is better at gaming. You are better off with the i5 unless you use programs that can take advantage of hyperthreading (which most games do not). At teh price point though, if you are not overclocking, it is down right stupid not to get  Xeon E3 processor.

A xeon is non-overclockable i7 with no iGPU. If you have no intention to overclock, and you have a dedicated gpu (which you should if you're intention is gaming) then go Xeon.

Care to back that up with PROOF?

Xeons are the exact same processor + ECC memory controller and a few extra inctruction sets. On a hardware level, they perform the exact same (if you disable the HT of the Xeon).

Basically it's an i7 that is locked so no overclocking and it does not have a gpu. Just because it is not designed for a gamer in mind does not mean it will do any worse than the i7 at the same clock speed. So don't listen to that nonsense.

Not all Xeons lack a GPU. The 12x0 series does not have a GPU, but the 12x1, 12x5 and 12x6 lines do have a GPU.

You might want to check your statements though. The only time what you said is true on the LGA1156/5/0 sockets is when you are comparing the Xeon to a Celeron, Pentium or i3 processor. The E3 series of Xeon are all Quad Core. That aside, for the 124x v3 and 123x v3 you get the price of an i5 with the performance of an i7, and equal clockspeeds (making it illogical to buy any i5 ever).

On the 2011 and 1567 sockets (e5/e7 xeons), they do have far more cores than their i series bretheren, but they are also a lot more expensive. Much as a 4930k is stupid for a gaming only rig, so is a E5 Xeon.

Overclocking is still a great reason to get an i5 (4670k/4690k)

Yea, for the 3-5FPS you MAY gain, and the cost of a cooler to OC and the extra cost of the processor. No thanks, it is not a good reason to get a i5/i7.  The difference in price could make the difference between say a 280x and a 290 or a 770 and a 780, in which case the better GPU is always going to give you far more advantage than any non LN2 overclock ever could.
