Minecraft - Lower FPS than expected?

I only get around 150 or so FPS on a standard survival world, which is far lower than I expected I'd be getting with my specs. This isn't a problem by itself, however if I install shaders the frame rate dips below 60 very often, and stays below 60 at all times if I decide to record with shaders on. In fact, with shaders I get the same FPS as I would in Skyrim + the 160 mods I use (mostly graphics mods).

 

I've asked a couple of people about their frame rates and some of them say mine seems right, although others are somehow able to get very very high numbers. For example I changed my settings to match that of a person with a 780, we stood in the same spot and he was getting around 700 FPS while I was only getting 200 ish, also neither of us were using any performance enhancing mods.

 

I'm really not sure if my frame rates are right. I've done a bit of research and I get the feeling that perhaps my graphics card drivers aren't treating Minecraft as a game, or perhaps it's using the iGPU? I've disabled the iGPU in BIOS though and I've added Minecraft to Catalyst Control Center so I'm not too sure if this is the case. In case it's relevant I've also allocated 3GB of RAM to Minecraft and I'm using Java 8 64 bit, though I've tried Java 7 which gets me the same frame rates.

Minecraft is horribly optimized.

And shaders don't help either, JRE is just bad in the first place. 

The newer versions of minecraft are a lot more rough.

update drivers for everything. check what size your texture pack is. run optifine. check CPU and GPU temps. make a baked potato. Make sure you're running the latest and greatest version of MC and Java. Try without mods, if any are installed. Overclock.

I get about 200 on my GTX 760 and 4670k. something is likely wrong.

Could it be that AMD cards don't handle Minecraft well? All the multiple hundred FPS people I know use Nvidia.

I have similar specs and I consistently get more than 250 fps, but I'm using optifine.... try that

I have an r9 290, and my fps is often above 300...

Programmers over at Spigot even say it's badly optimized

Well, I've never seen any performance enhancer in any other game do as good of a job as Optifine.

well in survival i get about 200 but in servers i get about 100 and i think im lacking a bit too

Try using Raptr or CCC to optimize your settings
