Hey guys please help! I put a small pea size amount of thermal paste on my CPU and I didn't put the heat sink on straight away, it must have been 5/10 mins until it was installed but didn't know what I was doing and was panicking, I've spent like £1,500 on my first PC and am not sure if I done it right, how do I know the thermal paste was applied correctly and the heat sink is in right, I'm about to put on my GTX 780 but am shaking so much, so wine talk me through what should have happened installing my heat sink and how I know if it's wrong and what I should do, I'm 16 and my dad would be really upset if I've screwed it up:/

Dude first off:  relax.

And second did you put the cooler on properly? It doesn't really matter how long you take . I've mucked around for much longer then that the first time i installed a cooler.

@ITnewbie welcome to the forums :D and congrats on your first pc build.  make sure to follow your posts so you can easily find them again

first thing you gotta do is chill. pea sized bit of thermal compound is perfect, it doesnt matter that you let it sit for a few minutes before putting on the heat sink.  just make sure you followed the installation instructions for the cooler and you should be perfectly fine.  you'll know its installed properly cuz it wont wiggle around, and your temps are reasonable. (assume that if it catches fire, you did something wrong)

remember that we're here if you have any questions.

Don't do anything taxing with it then, if you're not sure. The correct way to diagnose a poorly fitted CPU heatsink will typically have an overheating CPU, with the heatsink itself feeling cold to the touch. If this doesn't happen, there is no problem and your pc is fine.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

Just put it on, install windows, download CoreTemp and see if the temps are OK. Worst case scenario, you'll have to wipe off the thermal paste and put it back on.

Thank you all so very much! I've made some progress now, the heatsink is very sturdy no rock at all but it has a slight angle to it.. Like it's not 100% straight is that okay?:/ also a quick question I'm installing the GPU and does it have to go in the top slot because is really hard to fit in because of cables etc
