I have a 4790K under an NH-D15. It idles around 35 degrees and gets to around 65 degrees when not overclocked.

I used MSI's OC Genie to overclock - 4.4 GHz all cores at 1.2V. My hottest core jumps back and forth between 95 and 100 degrees, and the second hottest core sits around 93 degrees.

Does that seem average?

That is way to hot for that chip, is your heatsink seated correctly?

Waaaay too hot. Turn down your voltage or clock speeds. Don't recommend using OCing software to do the job, you always get a better OC if you do it manually.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

Celsius? That is hot. Even my 100W Q6600 can't touch that.

I'll re-mount it tomorrow.

I am unable to modify the settings manually, for some reason. I am in contact with MSI support, they recommended RMAing the board.

What happened to clarkson? You betrayed him?

Well, since I did that for @TheSLSAMG, I did so, but he got Anna Kendricks instead, so I shunned him.

With what software are you testing? Also what is load/use when you get 65C? I mean for full load thats good but for gaming temp its not.

I am doing all testing with prime95.

I am extremely confused now: It looked like the D15 had a good mount from the thermal compound, but I've re-done it twice and the temperatures haven't changed.

I installed the stock cooler. It idles at 30 degrees, but the second I try and p95 it starts thermal throttling (no overclocking going on here).

What's more, the temperature jumps almost instantaneously. There is no smooth increase in temperatures; it jumps from 30 degrees to 95 degrees in an instant, and the same thing with the D15.

It's almost as if the CPU die isn't properly affixed to the heat spreader. Does anyone know if this is a problem, or what might explain this?

@wpirobotbuilder, try with some other stresstester like XTU, Aida or OCCT (IBT also). Prime94 isn't recommended to use with Ivy, Haswell or later CPUs due voltage handling problem when you use adaptive mode. Generally its not being used for these CPU at all since others bring same or better results with less risk.

Does the heatsink itself actually feel hot to the touch when the cpu is hot? If it doesn't there may indeed be a mounting problem.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

Thank you. I am running OCCT right now. Without overclocking, P95 was giving me about 80 degrees on the hottest core. With OCCT it is around 52 degrees.

You think P95 was the problem?

Since nobody else asked him, what are your ambient temperatures? These count for a lot in terms of both idle and load temps.

About 24 degrees ambient.

Also I was derping about being able to change the OC settings. Apparently using the +/- keys on the keyboard were what changed it. Thanks everybody!

That would be my vote seeing that idle temps are normal and you haven't supposed to got so high voltages. You should still verify it by another test to be certain.

dude how many time do we have to say it DON'T USE prime95  it overvolts you haswell cpu

edit : i posted too late and everyone said that prime95 is the problem  already so take it as a remider

if i helped you and im right give me best answer ok  ;)
