This is what I could come up with for $1200. Had to take a more expensive CPU cooler (H80i) to remain within that black color scheme, 212 is good but ugly :P.

Hey techies, I've been using my PC for almost 7 years now and it's time for a well deserved upgrade. I've done a lot of research and I want to make my build as "bang for the buck"  as possible so here are the parts that I'm going for. I would very much like if you fellas' could help me make amendments if any to the build I'm planning and any feedback would be much appreciated.  :)

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k (devil's canyon)
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus VII Ranger z97
  • GPU: Asus GTX 770 2GB
  • RAM: Kingston HYPER-X Fury 1600 4x2 (So 8gigs in dual channel)
  • PSU: Corsair CX600M
  • SSD: 120gb Samsung 840 evo

Thanks,

Thanks,

Get a CS550M instead of the CX600M. CS is a bit better than CX and you do not need 600W.

Get Sapphire R9 290 Tri-x as opposed to GTX 770. Same price but more performance.

As for the memory you can do better. Give me your budget and location and I will make you a pcpartpicker build.

Thanks,

Why the ROG board? They're super overpriced.  And you may want to pick up a 7200RPM HDD as well.

Thanks for the feedback, hmm i'll look into the R9 290 Tri-x :) Budget is around $1200 and I study abroad in Malaysia. PC parts are a bit expensive here compared to North America.

I bloody hate making builds limited to color schemes. Look at the R9 290 Tri-x from sapphire. Best R9 290 on the market but orange as hell :P.

Would Black/Red color scheme be good as well? Also do you need a case or do you already have one and is it ATX?

I've got a mid tower HAF 912 with the window that I bought when it was on sale. And yes, the theme is red/black ^^

Oh, my guess is that the 212 EVO is too high profile and ugly then? :D

Hey, Uni life is hard ok... living on campus with no monies  :(

yeah, but "Future-proof" shouldn't be an allowed phrase on these forums.  You can't future-proof a PC.  My dad thinks you can which is why he bough a $2500 gaming/editing PC to store music and check email....

I was actually considering something like this at the beginning. However, the same H80i is around $140 here... But definitely will upgrade into an H80i or a H100i in the future :)

$140 The fuuuuuu....dge? Dear lord that is expensive. Stick to a 212 EVO then if you don't mind its high-profileness (that's a word now). Other than that I really couldn't think of other stuff that would be better for your build. Hell if you stepped away from the color scheme I could change this RAM for one that costs $2 more and has 1 CAS lower :P.  But meh, your choice. I like this build too. Any questions/doubts/suggestions please ask them now while I can still monitor the thread :P.

Just one, what PSU would you recommend if say I buy an addition R9 290 or 770 to go in crossfire/SLI.
