Not able to overvolt my processor

Go to solution Solved by Archangel1994,

I see... One last thing though, is there any way to really confirm it's the chip that can't go above stock? Like, is there a way to get an error message or something I mean?

If the computer can't stay stable during prime95 is THE way to confirm our chip can't handle a voltage higher than the previous setting. Since it can't even handle 30 seconds of prime95 I would say you got unlucky with the chip. Sorry :(. No error messages are there for an instantaneous shutdown due to CPU instability.

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum but not to the overclocking scene. I am new to AMD processors however. Anyway here's my problem and I hope someone here can give me some advice.

I recently finished my build of my AMD desktop PC. Specs below:-

  • Motherboard: Asus Crosshair V Formula Z
  • Processor: AMD FX-8350 @ 4.0 GHz OC'd to 4.7GHz currently
  • RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury HX316C10/F8 (8GB 1 stick but going to add another later on)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 2GB (Leadtek) OC'd GPU clock by 70, Mem clock by 300, OV'd by 12mV
  • PSU: Corsair GS700
  • Cooling: EK-240 watercooling Kit
  • Case: CM 690 III

Anyway, when I overclock my processor at stock voltages I can reach 4.74 GHz stable after running Prime95 tests for approximately an hour. But when I try to overvolt my processor by even a tiny bit, my computer will power off after 30 seconds of running Prime95. Anyone can tell me why? I know it's not cooling issues cause my temps under load don't even hit 50 degrees (Celsius).

Thanks

That just means your chip is not suited for higher voltages really.

But I have seen tutorials stating that they can achieve 4.8GHz easily and some even go to 5.0 GHz! Is it just my bad luck?

Yes. Chips are luck of the draw. Get lucky, you get a chip that handles high voltages well. Get unlucky, you can;t go above stock.

Aw that sucks... There's no chance it being my PSU not providing enough power?

If your PSU didn't supply enough 1 of 2 things would happen. Either the CPU/GPU would be downclocked to lower power consumption or the PC will just give up and shutdown entirely. That would not be limited to testing in prime95.

TBF it's not very worth buying a whole new CPU just because you are 0.3GHz below others. 4.7 is still pretty good.
