Hello looking to build my first rig and I was wondering would it be better to get the Pentium K and a nice z97 motherboard and then upgrade to broad well next year or get an i5 4690k and a "budget board" I will be overclocking either way. I mostly play games like LoL minecraft skyrim... Etc But mostly LoL

Id wait till broadwell, even something cheapish like an FX4300 till broadwell maybe?

That would be a bad idea to go with an AMD chip then upgrade to Intel as it would require getting both a new mobo and cpu instead of just a new cpu (if the mobo is the right socket and "tier" (Idk what its called, like z87 and z97))

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

4690K  Well since you're on a budget probably the G3258, you could always try out overclocking if you're new to it & if you bust the cpu it's relatively cheap to replace. Having a quad-core vs a dual core will show a bit of difference in the in-game performance.

Would the Asus Maximus vii hero be a good mobo to match it with?

any Z97 motherboard(s) are very good. It's seems that ROG aren't alway the top contender for providing great features & solutions.

Isn't he going to need a new mobo with the new chip anyway?

Can somebody recommend me a nice $200ish motherboard with good overclocking capabilities? And thanks for the help so far.

The Asus Z97-A has to be my favorite LGA1150 board. but I hear the Z97 PC Mate and Z97-G43 by MSI are good boards for the money.

Asus Z97-A is probably one of the better boards for the money, it doesn't look too fancy. But other than that, it's great.

So for a bit over $200 you can get a solid motherboard and a decent (G3258). Throw on a Hyper 212 and you're golden. Hell, you could probably even stick with the stock cooler, even for overclocking on that thing.
