I am helping a friend put together a new system. He really wants the following:

Case: Corsair Obsidian 450D

Motherboard: Asus Maximus VII Hero

Processor: i5-4690k

CPU Cooler: corsair H80i or H100i

ssd: just needs to hold the os he has a 1TB HDD

GPU: Gtx 760 or better somehow.

OS: windows 8.1.

He wants a ASUS motherboard at the very least, he really wants the Maximus VII Hero though. I just dont know if its worth the extra money.

He also wants a red and black theme.

I would love any suggestions. Thanks

spend more on your gpu. The benefits will speak for themselves in-game.

Unless you plan on sourcing your OS on the cheap from elsewhere this is the best I can do that meet your demands. The locked processor is trivial for all games as of now. If you wish to get an unlocked i5 you'll be over budget by $50, this can be circumvented by sourcing cheap OS. The particular Maximus Hero board I choose is the VII meaning it's the Z97 variant that has support for broadwell and various future amenities. The SSD is a little bit on the large side that's due to the fact that 256GB is a sweet spot on GB/Dollar, besides it's nice to have all your programs and games on the one drive. They also tend to have more performance due to more NAND Flash chips.

You gotta do you girl. I always say you gotta do you. And if he's doing him, then who's doing you? Because right now, it seems like no one's doing you.

120GB ssds are too expensive, try to fit a 250GB SSD, because you dont pay so much for t he storage

not really necessary for just the OS, which only really takes up 30gb

the gpu runs all games in ultra with 30FPS+...lol

he can still turn down AA for more FPS

why play at 30fps? you might as well play console.

use my recommendation and get a 770

+17GB recovery partition, keep in mind just the game titanfall takes up 51GB, BF4 39GB, etc

Also, when you have a ssd, you start wanting to have everything on the SSD

I have an SSD, and I like to keep everything away from it besides essential applications, drivers and my OS because I have self control

and why are you insisting on a lower grade GPU when he can get something better and still fit the budget?

I don't know why the other guys suggest 750W PSUs, but you sure won't need one. Also I would go with a MSI TwinFrozr GPU for the red and black colour theme. If the ASUS Hero is worth it depends on how much he wants to overclock. Same for the H100i.

No need for a ROG board or water cooling, unless you like wasting money. Also getting Windows 8.1 off G2A.com is a good way to save.
