For a while I've been contemplating obtaining myself a home server or NAS. Hummed, Ha'd and researched.

I think I've decided on an out of the box NAS solution like something from WD, Seagate or whoever.

So I'm basically looking for anyone's experiences good or bad with a product along these lines.

Here's links to 2 products along the lines of what I'm looking at getting. Not saying one of these 2, for reference only.

I have a Synology DS1512+ on the home network, it's been fantastic but it's also way outside what you're interested in.

One thing I would recommend from my own experience, make sure EVERY component between the NAS and anything using ethernet to connect to the network is gigabit capable. There's nothing more annoying than starting a transfer and seeing wireless level speeds.

Desktop - Custom watercooled R4E/i7 3930k/GTX 780 SLI/32gb 2400mhz DDR3/Xonar STX/OCZ V4 256gb RAID 0/24tb RAID 5

Laptop - Clevo P370EM - i7 3630QM/GTX 680M SLI/8gb 1866mhz DDR3/840 pro 256gb RAID 0/750gb mechanical

I've done the math and for what I actually need for storage vs price something like the Synology is just a bit much more. Thx for seeing that.

I know my computers are, I'll have to see if the router is, it came with the internet. I would assume it is, but I may be wrong. Anything wireless gets as much speed as anything wired. Yeah for crappy North American telecoms!  :P

Wireless will only equal wired for 'net based stuff, I'm on a slow ass ADSL1 connection but transferring across the network at ~100MB/sec is awesome. ;)

I'd encourage you to think about a dual bay solution running RAID 1 if you're putting essential stuff on there. Good luck. :)

EDIT: You'll also need to make sure your cables are CAT 5E or better.
