So technically it's my second build but the first was with my dad a number of years ago's for the family PC. Now it's a few years later and next year I plan to go to uni away home so I need my own PC. I'm planning to do a moderate overclock because I plan to have this PC for a number of years and I don't want any deterioration of performance during that time and I intend to do a decent amount of gaming (BF3, Far Cry 3 etc.) also some work.

I live in Australia so all costs will be in Australian dollars which are pretty much 1 to 1 with US dollars.

Budget: $2200

Proposed parts:

  • Cooling - Swiftech H220 - $149
  • CPU - i7 3770K - $349 (for some reason prices for ivy bridge have UP in Australia)
  • Motherboard - ASUS Maximus V Gene - $199
  • RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB - $75
  • GPU - ASUS HD7970 DCUII - $449
  • SSD - SanDisk Extreme SSD 240GB - $199
  • HDD - Seagate Barracuda 2TB - $91
  • PSU - Corsair HX-650 V2 - $139 + Some BitFenix extensions - $40
  • Case - Corsair Obsidian 350D windowed - $129
  • Monitor - LG EA53V-P 23in LED IPS - $189 (possibly a second)
  • Keyboard - Ducky Shine Zero Cherry MX Blue - $109

  • Mouse - SteelSeries Sensei Raw -$69

  • OS - Windows 8 - $99

Parts from PC Case Gear and MSY

So these are the parts I've been considering, it would be great to hear some feedback with ideas and opinions.

I would say wait for Haswell. Also, I am not sure how fast you want your SSD to be, but you could go with the Samsung 840 pro, probably the fastest SSD on the market right now. If you are going with the 3770k, I am assuming that you are probably going to be doing some video/photo editing work. Therefore, you might be better off getting 16 gbs of RAM.

If you're planning to play games and at 1080p, u only need a i5-3570k, a HD 7950, irather go for the Sabertooth Z77 and the C70 case, but i think that Maximus V Gene w/ a 350D will look awsome

Nothing is set in stone, please recommend some parts

I would suggest you to look for another SSD, like the Samsung 840 or the 840 pro. Other than that I think it's a good build, also be aware some Barracuda drives are bad, not sure what to say here but I seem to be one of those unlucky guys with the Barracuda, it's dying after 7 months of usage, yet my old 4 years old WD still works like new.

Haswell is only giving a marginal performance benefit, and if previous releases have taught us anything we can't expect much of a price drop. Also, the 840 Pro SSDs are a bit of a gimmick for most people, the extra performance of the Pro vs non-Pro is largely unnoticeable unless benchmarking. He didn't mention using the computer for any sort of editing so he's better off with a 3570K and up to 8GB of RAM.

One 7950 won't max out that monitor's 144Hz refresh rate on Far Cry 3, not even on Battlefield 3. 120/144Hz refresh rates give a large advantage to players who have it, especially in FPS.

You could take out one of the GPUs if you don't mind not maxing out the monitor's refresh rate.

Personally I don't  really mind too much about refresh rate or imput lag, I can happily game at 60fps especially if it's on an IPS monitor

I would buy a great case, PSU, cooling, but Mobo, CPU, GPU with good value. So that your system looks nice, is quiet and efficient. In 2 years you can buy a new CPU/GPU/Mobo combo. in the end you won't spend more money and have better performance.

This looks a lot better. I totally vouch for this.

Personally, I'd try to get 16gbs of cheaper ram with the same specs since ram is ram.

Also, an atx instead of micro-atx motherboard for more expansion.
