Specs: 

Intel 3970X

2x Sapphire HD 7970 reference in Xfire

64GB G.Skill 1600MHZ 9-9-9-24

 

1 Samsung 840 Pro 256GB

1 WD Velociraptor 1TB

 

The rig refuses to shut down, so we tried updating the BIOS. That didn't fix it. The monitor, keyboard, and mouse will all shut down, but the main rig keeps on ticking. Anyone have experience or knowledge regarding this little gem of a problem?

Try running shutdown -s -f -t 0, otherwise you can simply downgrade the BIOS.

sounds like a stopgap solution. I'd like to be able to sleep the machine but that has the same failure of the rig continuing to chug along and not wake up to the mouse or keyboard.

 

That command doesn't work either. Same result.

Perhaps; is there anything in the new BIOS update that are mandatory for your needs? You can update to the next BIOS when that comes out to see if the issue is resolved.

Sorry, clarified in OP. The problem existed before the BIOS update. Hoping this does not require disassembly and RMA because the whole thing is water cooled.

Have you tried booting a live Linux distro then shutting down to see if the result is replicated?

running on windows, but no haven't tried a reinstall yet. Will get back to you.
