So I go to PC Part Picker, to the PSU's I select Corsair/Full Modular/80+ Gold.

RM 650
RM 750
RM 850

All cost 119.99 each.  Why would the pricing be identical?  Does it not cost more to make an 850 than it does a 650?  And if your rig only needs a 650, would you just get the 650 if you could get an 850 for the same price?

I've noticed this before and it just strikes me as odd, anyone else curious on this or better yet, able to explain/elaborate on it?

Don't buy an RM.

You can get the EVGA Supernova 850W G2 for $99.  It is the all-round better PSU.

PCPartsPicker pulls prices from a number of retailers, and the price they show you will be the cheapest one they found.

INTEL CORE i5-7600K | ASUS ROG STRIX B250i GAMING | CRUCIAL BALLISTIX SPORT LT 16GB | EVGA GTX 970 SC | EVGA B3 550W
SAMSUNG 850 EVO 250GB | CRYORIG M9i | BE QUIET! PURE WINGS 2| FRACTAL DESIGN DEFINE NANO S

Just strikes me as odd that they are all the same price.  Dunno.

EDIT: It's almost like they're encouraging people into bigger PSU's than what's needed really.  But the profit motive is reversed.   It might be because of available stock, if they made the same number 650's 750's and 850's and the 650's were outselling the 850's then the price of the 850's might come down to push those and ease the pressure of having to make more 650's to meet demand, rather, they'll just get funneled into a reduced price 750/850.

Why is it better?  Other than the 10 year warranty, I do like that.

Its very highly rated from jonnyguru I think it was a 9.9.  There is something you need to keep in mind with that PSU though and that it is longer than the typical PSU of that wattage so you will want to take that into consideration depending on your case.

I don't know anything about making PSU's, but why WOULD it cost more to make one for a higher wattage?

I don't think the materials inside are really the cost, but R&D/production/testing/shipping etc is.

If anyone does know, please explain :-)

Well I have a 750 already, but it's non-modular, so for cable management I have what I'm not using tied back adjacent to the PSU.  I want modular so I can get rid of that wad of cable and improve overall airflow.  If this PSU will just occupy that space anyway it might not be what I'm looking for.  I just picked up brackets to install my drives into the available 5.25" spots so I can remove the HD cage to free up airflow.  So next is the PSU to be done up modular.  One thing at a time. *grin*

I only really need a 550 but I want some headroom so I'm actually shopping for a 650, I just noticed the 850 at the same price and it has me baffled.

I would think it's slightly more materials, an 850 might be a little larger than a 650, so the little more metal, slightly larger fan perhaps, just spitballing here.

Why is it better?  Other than the 10 year warranty, I do like that.

First: double the warranty length. 5 years compared to 10 years

Second: In the U.S. the Supernova 850 G2 is less expensive right now. $100 compared to $120 for the RM 850

Third: The capacitors in the RM series are not up to par when compared to other PSUs in that class and price range. The capacitors in the Supernova are of the highest Japanese quality, probably why they provide double the warranty length.

Fourth:  Coil whine is a very known and prevalent issue in the RM series. More common in the 650, but is present in all models.

Buy the Supernova at that price before it goes out of stock, was down to less than 10 in stock the last time I checked.
