I am new to the LTT forums, but not to computers in general, will add in other details (profile pic, signature, etc) over time.

Anyway, I have been researching for a while now as to what I want my first custom build to be (coming from a poorly aging Dell XPS 8300... I was a noob then, I've since learned my lesson).

My goal is high end gaming (MechWarrior Online maxes out the VRAM on my 1 GB Radeon HD 6870, as shown in MSI Afterburner) and audio production (I make music in my spare time).

Here is the build I have planned: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/YppNxr

I know that I want a 4 GB Radeon R9 270X, I just can't decide which brand to go with (5 available: Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, Sapphire, and XFX). As for the case, I was originally planning to go with a Corsair 750D, but then I saw the air cooling capabilities of the Rosewill Thor V2 (includes 3 x 230mm fans and 1 x 140mm fan by default, and you can add a 120/140mm fan on the bottom).

Mayonnaise is an instrument!

Current Build - Ryzen 7 3800x (eco mode enabled), MSI B550M MAG Mortar, G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2x16) 3200 14-14-14-34, EVGA 2060 KO Ultra, EVGA G2 550W, Phanteks Enthoo Pro M, Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Rx

IMO you're spending way too much on the motherboard and RAM. 8GB of DDR3-1600 will work just fine for gaming and editing. Here is what I suggest:

Ditch the second 780, get better cooling, a better case and a larger SSD and this is golden IMO.

Dude, DEFINE R4 is great, SSD is fine for OS and stuff, but maybe yeah.

Not as good as the AIR 540 nor the H440 IMO. Drive cages kill it for me. A bigger SSD is amazing. Load the OS and most games on it. Having a SSD for just the OS sucks as you have terribly long loading screens in games like BF4. I say at least a 250gb.

I'd recommend a dac and amp over a sound card.

Chose a k CPU

for music production use a raid 1 set of drives.

Also, vram does not equal performance. I have a 6870. It's just getting old. The 780ti is top dog at 3GB. Unless you are 4k gaming, don't worry about vram way to much. Not to many people actually understand they way it works anyway.

Lots of big fans do not necessarily cool a case properly.

I would suggest a completely different build to meet your needs.

I meant to put in the OP that I am starting college soon and am going into video game design, possibly messing around in Autodesk Maya, Z-Brush, and the Adobe-related applications, on top of lots of web browser activity (usually 5-10ish tabs), so I feel that the extra RAM is justified. Edit: Example: I might run Minecraft, Firefox and Z Brush all at once. Edit 2: As for the Motherboard, I 'm just switch to an MSI MPower (non-AC) and get a PCI Express Wireless-N card.

<powerful build>

I just want to let everyone know that I don't want my power consumption to be too high. Then again I might just be uninformed.

I'd recommend a dac and amp over a sound card.

Noted.

Edit 3: I messed around with the build a little bit and came up with this http://pcpartpicker.com/p/s7Gwyc

If you mean in relation to the power supply, a computer only uses as much power as it needs, a system with a 750w power supply doesn't suck 750w out of the wall, it just takes what it needs, and in the system I put together there, maybe 350-400w.  Not really much more than the system you put together, just the difference a more powerful graphics card makes.
