Difference between amd chipsets

They are all compatible with each other, the 990fx has the best OCing potential and latest features compared to the 970 which has least ocing potential and features.

erm, no? i think you'll find the 760g is a bit lower than 970?

and considering i have 2 boards with 970 chipsets an 8+2 vrms i can overclock just as well as a crosshair 5, the only thin they lack is 3 way crossfire and sli support (except maybe 1 or 2) but are usually 1/2 to 1/3rd of the price.

6300-760g not overclocking much

6300-970 overclocking

8320/8350-970/990fx for overclocking and crossfire

everything 9XX has sata3 6gb/s so is best if you want an ssd.

oh, you're right, fair play i didn't notice (didn't read it properly), i was just assuming the op was clueless (like all those threads we see with 4670k's on h67 boards) and knew nothing about amd chipsets at all.

PCIe Lanes are the difference.

 

970: 16x Gen2 to CPU and 4x Gen2 to Northbridge, compatible with X-Fire

990X: 16x Gen2 to CPU and 2x Gen2 to CPU, compatible with X-fire + SLI

990FX: 2x 16x Gen2 to CPU, compatible with X-fire + SLI

 

The OCing potential only comes from 990FX boards usually being higher end anyway and higher end boards have better quality VRMs etc.
