Hi , I built my PC a week before christmas last year and haven't really had any game time since building it which is very frustrating due to what I know it's capable of.

Now what happens when I try install it, the PC will install everything else in the Catalyst package and when it gets to the display driver the screen will flash, return to normal for about a second and then go black and the GPU fan will go to maximum speed until I perform a hard shutdown.

What I have tried:

  • Manually select driver in hardware manager, same result as above
  • Uninstall Basic Display Adapter then install driver and restart, same thing
  • Tried a different PCIE slot same thing
  • Probably done about 25ish fresh installs each time installing chipset driver, I have now memorized my activation code, still does nothing
  • Updated BIOS, de nada
  • Clear CMOS, nope
  • Tried installing Os on 3 Different drives each time with all other drives unplugged, same end result.
  • Tried Windows 7, as you may have guessed didn't work
  • DDU in safe mode, restart, then install, nah
  • Diffferent plugs on PSU even though i'm sure this is software related

The PC works perfectly with no Display driver and everything else off the discs included with the parts purchased it's just the display driver that does this.

PC Specs

  • Windows 8 64bit
  • Amd Fx-8350 Stock speed
  • Asus M5a99x Evo R2.0
  • Sapphire R9 290x
  • Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz 1.5v CL9 LP
  • Samsung 840 Evo 250gb
  • Antec HCG-850M

Thanks for any help at all

Yes, every driver from around October last year until now. Sorry for not including that above.

Sorry for not responding sooner, forum doesn't seem to be working 100%. Try using display driver uninstaller then install the latest drivers but try the beta if possible. If nothing see if another GPU works correctly if possible. RMA seems like the best option for now unless else comes along and helps you out better than I have for a possible fix. Good luck.

Yeah i'm also having issues with the forum, and once again I have to apologize for not including above that I tried to RMA the GPU and it was tested and found to be performing just as it should and no errors were found.

Strange..  Have you tried another GPU? And I'm sorry other than that I have nothing and this is the first time I've even seen this it kinda baffles me to be honest. And this point I'm not sure what to think. Sorry.

probably just some trace of a previous driver remaining, it's a big process but I'd try to reformat my drive and reinstall windows in your case, thats usually what i do with unfixable software problems :P

just remember to back up all your files if you're gonna do this XP (I always forget) Good luck :D

Use DDU to completely get rid of any trace of Nvidia/AMD drivers first.

I really don't think you should be trying to uninstall Basic Display Driver because that's Microsoft's band-aid for your PC until you get a proper driver running so if you don't even have that...expect problems.

1. Just try to get into Windows first. First time did not work for me, but second time did, albeit at 1024x768.

2. Download latest Beta driver from AMD website and pray to god that Basic Display Driver holds out until then. Catalyst 14.7.

3. reboot when it tells you to.

Don't ever ever ever ever use the included drivers on the CD. It's easier for me because my H440 can't take CD media anyway  :P but go straight to AMD's website.

For me the big problem was that Nvidia's drivers failed to uninstall completely. Technically they were gone, but without DDU, after I installed Catalyst, either Windows automatically rolls back to R331 or Geforce drivers never actually removed, because as soon as the Geforce drivers reappear, Catalyst and Geforce are at each others' throats and my pc goes GG. I know it's weird, but remove every single trace of the previous driver from your system, whatever it is.

Hope this helps!

I unfortunately don't have any other GPUs to try as this is my first build and I don't know anyone who games on a PC. No worries man any suggestion is appreciated

Yeah even after many fresh installs and reformatting with absolutely no trace of previous drivers it still happens and at this point i'm used to starting again with all my files, I try not to keep anything important on here.

I can always get into windows fine when there is no display driver other than the microsoft basic display driver but it's when i try to install any display driver it crashes. Am about to try turning off virus protection software and install it will be back with results

I feel like there's something wrong with the graphics card itself; might want to throw into another system to try it out. What other software might be conflicting with the card? I mean, if this is a pretty new system, would there be anything on the M5A99FX disc that you installed that might clash with Catalyst?

A problem with the connectors on the PSU is highly unlikely but not implausible. It is a modular PSU, and a [relatively] budget one at that.

No I haven't but the RMA centre tested it and found it to be absolutely fine.

the RMA center might just have tested that its working with a preinstalled driver on a machine, try it yourself if you can to be sure of that it is not the GPU and rule that out.

Not sure if this helps but it may point to a faulty mobo, I purchased 6 3 pin corsair fans a few months ago and when I plugged them into the mobo and started it up the fans were running at max all the time and in the bios it showed they were running at 0rpm and would occasionally flash 5000 or so rpm, same thing happened when using software meant to control fan speed. It is in no way controllable via software, it just doesn't function normally so I have plugged them all into the fan controller built in to the case and that works. Does that make anyone think maybe I should RMA the mobo?

So I downloaded just the Amd chipset off Asus's website and installed it on a fresh install then tried the display drivers and same thing happened. So I don't think it's anything off the disc.
