I have a 7950 with xfx cooler. It isn't overclocked and I just got my brother's old monitor(1680x1050) as a second monitor. I know that the XFX cooler is bad now but I got it with my first build a few years ago so I didn't know. Is there anything I can do without buying a new graphics card to make it run cooler. I have to have the fans running at 1500 RPM to keep it at 51 degrees and I have pretty good airflow.

Yep spot on, the XFX cooler is atrocious. I found the 2nd monitor raised my idle temps by like 20 degrees, so you could try turning off the 2nd monitor and see the results?

yeah, unplug your second monitor to see if it changes

my 7950 has a sick triple slot cooler from asus, its amazing. mine idles at 36* and goes to 45* i believe with my second screen. either turn your fans up or just use one monitor. its because the GPU idles at a higher speed with mutiple displays.

I also read somewhere that having two different resolutions will make it hotter is this true?

No. I'm running a 1080p and 1280x1024. The temps are the same. ~38-40C idle

Turning off the monitor makes it 40 degrees which I know is still not good but I didn't know it was bad when I got it first. But I would like to keep the second monitor because it makes everything easier

Well that's really all you can do without changing the cooler for a different one...

Using more than one monitor set your GPU to 2D mode. In 2D mode your frequency and power consumption is increased. This leads to the increased temperatures you see.

I also have a Radeon 7950, although it is Sapphire as opposed to XFX, and it idles at around 50 C with 2 monitors. I just unplugged my second monitor and it is down to the mid 30s. What I've done to allow myself to still have 2 monitors is I plugged my secondary monitor into my iGPU so it still displays, but doesn't stress my main GPU.

If your CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, then you might have to live with the extra heat or just one monitor.

You can do that? Is it as simple as just plugging it into the motherboard hdmi or do I need to tweak something to make it work?
