Hi,

I have a MSI R9 290 gaming for which I'm trying to take the backplate off. I've unscrewed every screw that holds the pcb sandwiched between backplate and frontplate. I've taken off frontplate but now that it comes to taking off the backplate, I'm having problems.

The backplate lifts off the pcb fine except at 4 locations where the backplate is glued to pieces of something that are glued to the pcb (1 on the side and 3 on the far edge). I've tried pulling, and twisting the backplate pretty hard and I am afraid of going harder.

How do I do this? Is it supposed to be removable?

Probably just thermal pads. Make sure its not a screw and then pull fairly hard. I was confused as well when removing the backplate on my card. I swift tug pulled it off. Don't pull too hard as I may be wrong.

They're likely just pieces of adhesive. Try on one of the corners where the adhesive is to pry the backplate off. If it comes off then you'll know the rest of the pieces will.

the backplate cannot be removed without damaging the card.

Those "sticky pads" are so adhesive that I can't take the backplate off with alot of strength. I would imagine if it did come off, pcb pieces would too.

A credit card or similar will get them off, plenty of people do it when they put a water block on.
