Upgrading to gtx 760 concerns

Go to solution Solved by Thony,

How about Q8400 or Q8400s ? is this a better solution than overclocking my current cpu also maybe i can overclock that one to 3 ghz

Q8400 is minimum requirement for watchdogs that means it is capable of running the game at lowest settings.

Q8400 can get to 3.0ghz, dont know what air cooler could achieve that since I dont know the chips heat output when reaching 3.0ghz but you can easily google it out as many people OCed it to that level.

Intel Core 2 Quad chips are stupidly close to i5 prices btw and i5s are lot more powerful and up to date. But that would require to really build new PC...

I did same thing as you are going to do.

I had Q8300 and put GTX 760 in there. Originaly I had GT310 so it was great improvement but I noticed that I was not getting much out of it as I expected to. Benchmarks were pretty low like half the value others were getting with proper rig. So your CPU will bottleneck the card even if u overclock. It will improve in FPS but I dont know how much, definately not to the full potential of 760 thought.

Watch Dogs is not well optimized and still runs like poo even after 2 months since its been released... I am running watchdogs on High settings (water ultra, gpu buffered frames 3, 8x MSAA, no blur) with the new rig and I can feel that sometimes its not smooth. Far Cry 3 and Bioshock Infinite run totally fine :)

kk so while i dont have an upgraded cpu can i overclock my Q8200 to fast enough speed so it wont bottleneck the 760 that much and run both on a 500W psu?

500w is enough but I cant help u with Q8000 series as I didnt overclock mine. But one guy already said that you should overclock to 3.0ghz, but if it is possible to get 700mhz more out of your chip on your mobo you have to find that out. But max tempreture for you chip is 71 degrees celsius and I can tell that would be hard to maintain.

Last thing, this is interesting website to see if you can run a certain game, when u change the system requirements (drop down menu under the graph) to minimum or recommended you can see that EVGA 750ti FTW can run the game on medium settings.

For the RAM (RAM sticks not the ram on GPU) when I play watchdogs i use 2.6-2.8gb so your 4GB should be fine. And also 2.66ghz Q8400 is very close to minimum requirements line so 3ghz will run it for sure.

"Game Debate" is absolutely terrible. Minimum requirements are just so you can even launch the game. You want to go above the Ultra requirements if you want to get an idea of what it will actually take to run a game properly. watch Dogs is broken console port shit.

Might not be accurate but gives idea, disagree about your ultra requirements. Got 760 have no problems about your "ultra requirements crap".

That's why 780ti drops below 20fps in some areas. 760 Will not max out WDs unless you run no AA.

Like I said you must go above and beyond the recommend Ultra specs in order to actually play and enjoy the ultra settings.

He is right though. To have an enjoyable gaming experience, you need to go above the ultra settings requirement if you want to play at ultra.

Read what I/O said above. He mentioned ultra settings. But that's besides the point. To play ultra settings you need more than the recommended specs for ultra.

All i5 cost about the same no matter what generation (sandy-ivy-haswell), there can be $10-$40 difference depending who you buy it from and what stock clock its running at.

If you know you will never want to overclock you go for non K version like

i5-4590 (pretty good price point) with H97 series mobo and for about $320 (depending on features u want on your mobo) u got very good setup :)

For overclocking i5-4690k with Z97 mobo (can be overclocked to 4.2ghz)
