Good day all,

Having came across Linus tech tips while researching for my new build, Linus strongly recommended this forum for expert and friendly help.

I'm pretty much a noob to all these tech stuff, my last rig was built in the pentium 4 era.

I'm wondering if you guys can help me give some recommendations and advice to the rig I'm building to.

Location: Singapore (Note the shipping constraints)

Currency: SGD$

Budget: SGD$1500 -> USD$1250 (CPU only)

Sad to say that there are several constraints for my country in terms of shipping; there is no newegg and our own dedicated amazon site.

I can only buy stuff which are eligible through Amazonglobal free shipping which severely limits my options.

Local retailers and distributors in my country marks up the prices by 30-40% with no good support from them. So local distributors are a no-go. D:

I have no overclocking experience but I do not intend to stay this way. Looking to overclock the motherboard and processor to get more bang for my buck.

Purpose of this PC:

Gaming PC with a style

Parameters I'm looking out for:

1. Stability of system (first time shopping online for electronic goods)

2. Space for future upgrades (after 2 years)

3. A look good factor (custom theme of any sort)

Hi fellow Singaporean

welcome

nice you have a plan set out

note that if you get a Z87 board, you will need to do a BIOS update to use the 4690K CPU

if you don't want the hassle get a Z97 board

a basic air cooler like the CoolerMaster 212 Evo/Plus will do the trick

I may suggest looking at AMD R9 290 to pair with that 1440P screen

generally you will need only 550-600 watts PSU

Hi and welcome to the Linus tech tips forum @Fefalas

If you want a decent air cooler with a huge overclocker I'd get something from either Noctua or Be Quiet erm..If you don't mind the colour I'd get the Noctua NH-U14s. If you want it to go with your motherboard colour then I'd get the Be Quiet Dark rock pro 2/3. If you believe that you may run into issues within installing somewhat large heatsinks then I'd turn my agenda to look at aio like the corsair hxxx or nzxt kraken lineup

Please become a member of the Linus Tech Tips forum, keep writing smug remarks & let us love you. Peace out.

I have come up with a list of specifications (and some parts that I have researched so far) that I am looking out for:

CPU:  I5-4690K
CPU Cooler:  Recommendations?
Motherboard:  MSI/Gigabyte Z87 card
Memory:  8GB DDR 3
Storage:  Samsung EVO 840 250GB
Storage:  Seagate Barracuda 7200 1TB
Video Card:  Best card possible with allocated budget
Case:  Cosair Obsidian 450D
Power Supply:  Recommended watts? (80+ preferred)
Monitor:  QNIX QX2710 LED Evolution II (1440P monitor with only

Once again, I want to thank you guys for reading this long wall of text and helping out! =D

what I did was convert your 1500 spd to usd and made a part list to see what would work out for you

I know the build is about 100$ overbudget, but you are gettting High end components and even some upgrades compared to the list you drew up.

I chose the G45 Motherboard, because in the future you are able to add another video card, but you can get a cheaper board if you want to. You could also get only 8gb of ram and a 1tb Hard Drive, but the price difference in the Hard drives is so low that I would only recommend getting the 2tb version. Also don't get a smaller than 250gb SSD, because games like Battlefield are so large and it would take for ever to load on a HDD

Hi dragoon20005!

its really nice to be first greeted by a fellow singaporean!

on the Z87 vs Z97 front: I believe from the users here they mentioned that the only distinct difference is only the SATAe feature available on Z97, which I thought was no big deal.

Z87 BIOS update: Is the BIOS update troublesome? I would not mind the hassle if its doable on my own.

On the CoolerMaster 212 Evo/Plus: is the closed loop water cooling system recommended? Or just that air cooler would be sufficient to run all my needs (moderate OC to 4400/4500mhz)

Is there a particular reason why R9 290 of so many choices?

Noted on the 600W power supply requirement!

Hi @wng_kingsley7

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by a huge overclocker, but i was intending to overclock the processor to run @ 4400/4500mhz.

Colour and theme wise - nothing is decided as of now.

I would welcome any suggestions in terms of colour and theme (I'm fine with even pink), what's important is consistency across the parts.

Hi @chicksoup

Thanks for taking time for recommending this list of specs and parts, but I have no use of this because a lot of the distributors you have listed does not provide shipping to my country (Singapore).

I would still use this as a future reference to my plan!

yes for certain board like MSI, Asrock and Gigabyte

you will need to boot to BIOS in order to update the BIOS code which means you need a CPU and RAM to begin updating

for Asus, you can update it without the need of the CPU

you can see the link in my sig

yea you don't need any water cooler for basic to mid OC

while both the GTX780 and 290 are evenly matched

The advantage of the 290 is that it has 4GB of VRAM which give it the edge over the GTX780 in terms of setting every details to max out without hitting the VRAM limit on the 3GB in the GTX780 and it much cheaper compared to Geforce offering.

Hi I have edited the build post.

I realised that I'm hitting my budget very quickly despite not having added my motherboard D:

reduce you RAM to 8GB

see if you can go with 1TB first
