Is this an open headphone?

It's a pair of Closed Headphones.

Their Closed back.  Positional awareness with closed are going to be less then what you'd get with open pair.  but still usable for gaming IMO.  

 

Closed are for Isolation and Open for Sound stage.

 

COPs are a versatile headphone for on the go use with a portable and some PC gaming when you add on the mic attachment they make.  

 

If the sale is really good, I'd say buy them.

 

If you want open, HD558 w/ an V-Moda BoomPro mic would be a good choice too. IMO

The Boom pro will not work with a Sennheiser, wrong connection, and the connector is recessed and locking...

For what it's worth I have heard that soundstage on the COPs is actually pretty good. It's also possible to get velour pads for them which could help with that as well.
