I am interested in a free VPN solution for Ubuntu, I travel about 2-3 times a year and no longer trust the security of coffee-shop and hotel Wi-Fi. I am a complete noob to VPN and would greatly appreciate it if someone schooled me on the basics of VPN technology.

Thanks!

There are two main types of VPN's out there, OpenVPN and PPTP (that i have used and seem the most popular) PPTP is faster but less secure and OpenVPN is slower but alot more secure. (This is all just from my experiance)

For me im using the PPTP VPN on my asus AC-66u router, partly because im lazy and partly because i never do any thing important over it aka its just to get on reddit at school.

VPN software as the server you connect to or the client software? For most OS's even mobile OS's they have a built in VPN client.

OpenVPN is not a type of VPN nor a protocol. There's two types of VPNs Remote Access and Site to Site both use same and different protocols calls such as PPTP.

If you thinking so that you will use the VPN it doesnt work that way. If you connected to the VPN you would be on the same internet connection your computer was on. If you want to host it for other people you have to figure out what type of VPN you want to use.

I'm baffled here. Can someone draw up a diagram of how VPN works?

@LAwLz has a section in the FAQ, with a diagram and overview/explanation ...
