What is Ubuntu?

Go to solution Solved by Akolyte,

Ubunut is, no... no its not compatible.  Ubuntu is a Linux distribution, it is a completley different operating system all together, so no.  Its a completley diferent thing and is compatible with most pcs but cannot run inside or on top of windows, it can run alongside it depending on whether you have windows 7 or windows 8.

I cant help feeling like you a trolling us, but either way.  I hope this has helped you.

Ubuntu is an open-source operating system that uses the Linux kernel. It is compatible with most x86-based machines, but it is not compatible with phones or consoles.

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution that is designed for maximum usability from installation onwards. It can replace Windows though it will not natively run Windows applications without the use of WINE and is an operating system that runs on your PC. @ddbtkd456

So you can't run it with windows? I'm kinda a noob when it comes to servers...this might be a long thread.

It is an alternative to Windows.

There's Ubuntu ARM and mobile which works on ARM boards and some android phones.

So what would be my best bet since I want to make a server computer? (cheap)?

I think you should read more about operating systems and Linux in particular before trying to make a server of any kind. Wikipedia is a good place to start.

I guess Ubuntu would, Linux I think is better for budget servers and NAS computers.

Though, I would probably be prepared your server computer might die or fail often because a server (running 24/7) usually has special hardware designed to be stable and thats very expensive.   Just as a warning.

What exactly do you want to do with said server?

I'm not quite sure, there are specific versions of windows designed for server like Windows Server 2012 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/products/windows-server-2012-r2/#fbid=hbGF03tcyOp

But who am I to say, I'm not super experienced on the server side of things sorry.

It's okay, and sorry I don't know much about networking or servers, I know a ton of things about computer hardware, software, and windows based things....and how to set up my home network, but lately I've been playing around with the idea of setting up an "always on" network server dedicated to serving my xbox 360, and 2 other computers, while at the same time backing up both of our 1 terabyte drives (1 terabyte in each computer), I've read alot about an HTPC but I dont think that really servers the purpose I am looking for it to do...I've looked into NAS bays but those get expensive...thats why I was wondering what this is to see if it would work on a cheap computer on my network.

If you've previously won the build off please pm me so we can get something worked out.

All Linux is like that. They can very easily recompile it, unlike Windows where you don't have the source  <_<

If a Unix based server is out of the question that leaves you with one other option, a windows based server. For that you have the option to choose between 2003, 2003R2, 2008, 2008R2, 2012, 2012R2. Each year has a home/essentials version, a standard, a enterprise (Except for 2012 and 2012R2) and a Data center version. Any time you see R2 next to the year think of that as being like a Service pack with added features, much like 8.1 was to 8.

It is important to note that at this point 2003 and 2003R2 are EOL (End of Life) so they will have no updates just like XP. If I were building a Server right now, I would not go bellow 2008R2 unless the application in question does not run in a X64 environment or the Schema in my forest called for a lower revision.

It's just an overall software rule that if it's open source people will probably have it running on more platforms.
