Hi There!

Can you give me the Average Temperature for the Windforce R9 290?

What should I Buy?

GTX 780 or R9 290?

Goals:

Good Temperature to Performance ratio

Reliability

Durability

Thanks

The 780 will draw less power and will also be slightly more powerful.

@RayBalls

The R9 290 is a very good card for it's price, and the Windforce cooler is also a pretty decent cooler.

Here is a link to the temperatures that the Windforce reaches under certain circumstances, compared with several other types of cards. Including the 780 and the TRI-X cooler for the 290.

They are equal in almost all benchmarks on average, as well as the 290 being cheaper but as you said, runs hotter & more power drawn.

Please do not use GPUboss for those kinds of comparisons since they both use reference cards and frankly no one should buy ref cards unless watercooling support is in mind, or glamor shots of the titan cooler, use other sites for comparisons.

Go with the R9 290 Tri-x its the coolest and most silent :)

Thanks Guys I've been searching for Ages for a Temperature Graph You have my Gratitude!

I find reference benchmarks to be most indicative of the "base performance" of a card. Any non-reference design you find will be at least that powerful, because it is built to that spec and then altered. That's why I use GPUBoss.

Maybe, but this generation the AMD cards are just stupid on ref cooling.

Looks fine, very balanced build, if you feel like you need to upgrade something of it then try looking for a 290X or 780 Ti with a nice custom cooler.

You can check out the Seidon 240m as its very cheap in the states right now. (http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rls24m24pkr1)

Thanks Man!

That Was Fast!

It'll Probably take 3-5 Years Till I Upgrade

I'm Planning to Have a Custom Loop Next Time

no just no the 290 is faster than 780 in more games. Read a review on the 290 for a change instead of taking biasboss bought and payed for opinions as the be all and end all LOL. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-290-review-benchmark,3659-9.html

Only problem I really see with your build is that you are spending $80 on 1600MHz memory. If you spend $5 more you can get a 2400MHz kit of G.Skill

You're welcome.

Have no doubts about G.Skill either, they have some of the highest ratings as well. Offering the best performance to price ratios compared to other companies.

Oh god, GPUBoss. That site is so biased to NVIDIA it hurts my brain. If you want real un-biased reviews check ANY OTHER SITE. Preferably AnandTech.

I love how you guys are so quick to assume that people get paid for reviews. GPUBoss puts a lot of weight in power efficiency, which is why Nvidia cards come out on top more often. I also consider power efficiency to be very important, however in my experience GPUBoss has not been that biased.

I don't take it as the be all and end all. I look at the specs myself, read up on the architecture, (what it's good for, what it's focused on) and then read AnandTech.

I do consider the 780 to be the better card out of the two, but if you play a lot of Mantle games then the answer is the 290. The 290 runs very hot with the stock cooler though, I'd recommend the Sapphire Vapor Tri-X one or whatever it's called.

You know they call it BiasBoss fop a reason LOL. Mantle games run just fine on nvidia hardware which is another positive for AMD as they are no cock blocking the competition like nvidia and Intel trys to do with shit tier coding for the competitors, Intel Compiler, Physx, Over Tessellation etc. Stop complaining about the 290 being hot as only a moron would by reference and then complain about it.

So you're telling me I shouldn't be concerned that the stock implementation of something barely works?

Shit tier coding? Intel Compiler? If you don't like their compiler use Visual C++ or GCC. Visual C++ has an arguably better compiler anyways.

How is Nvidia cock blocking? Do you even know what cock blocking is?

Stock implementation barely works ? What are you on about ? AMD Reference cooling ? Well it works and get her done but of course you have better choices so lets stop complaining about nonsense issues that don't exist here. If AMD coolers were the only choice then you would have a valid gripe but you are coming off as a fan boy now. Intel compiler sucks this is a know fact. nvidia/Intel is cock blocking my epeen from getting wet in that sweet sweet red spot of AMD.

You have a lot of choice when it comes to compilers. I don't know anyone who uses Intel compilers. It's not as if they're actually better than anyone else's, you could write one yourself if you knew x86 assembly language.

The R9-290 is known to go up to 95 degrees with the stock cooler. I don't care if there are other solutions, that's abysmal. Would you buy a Corvette that only did 0-60 without overheating if you installed an aftermarket radiator? Neither would I.
