so a while back when i got my laptop it shipped with win 8 pre installed, the when 8.1 came out i got the free update to 8.1, after updating i noticed that most of the led indicators stopped working, mute, wifi, ssd activity, trackpad lock. The power, battery and USB indicators still worked, the web cam also no longer works, when i check settings it says it is still enabled but on apps such as Skype and the included webcam app says it is disabled or i don't have one, any ideas?

The notebook is a hp pavillion g6-

i7 - 3612QM quad core cpu @ 2.1ghz

6gb ram - upgraded from 4gb

128gb crucial ssd - upgraded from 500gb hdd

amd radeon hd 7600M series gpu

+ new 10000mah battery

That is why I don't buy HP. Dell business class laptops (maybe also home, but I can't check, never had one) does all this stuff at the hardware level, meaning no mater the OS, even if you are in the BIOS, all will work as it is supposed to. My Surface Pro 2 acts the same way as well.

Smart design, are worth the premium price. I believe it the same for Lenovo ThinkPad series, at least for most of it's buttons/features.

Anyway, to fix your problem, you probably need to install an HP software that was removed by the upgrade process due to compatibility issues known by Microsoft which 'causes issues during the upgrade process. Check HP website to get it back. If you can't figure it out, call HP tech support. It must be noted however (just something to keep in mind), that HP also (it's the only manufacture to my knowledge, that does this), doesn't make available all the needed software to get everything to work. Usually the webcam software is kept secret. This is so that you send the laptop in for the upgrade process. I was once told it cost 75$ + shipping. You can contact HP support for the correct pricing, and how much time it will take (I think I was told 2 to 4 weeks, but I don't recall, so I could be wrong).

Good luck. :/

if downlading all the drivers from hp's website doesn't fix it you may want to check the power setting, 8.1 is great for shutting off power to devices, I had to go into the registry to fix the power settings on one of my usb ports so corsair link could communicate with my h100i because 8.1 was just keeping most of the usb mb headers turned off. Also my kids mother has an hp laptop and her camera keeps coming physically unplugged since it appears they made the cord just to short and if you open the screen just to far it unplugs itself and she has to pop the bezel off around the screen and plug it back up all the time.

And i would really like to get it working as i dont have a webcam on my PC and its a decent laptop and i would like to keep it, but i probably would buy a surface pro 3 (When the price drops), i got it about 1 year ago so its probably out of the warranty period, if it was covered anyway - dont think it would be

Thanks,
