So i'm building a high end gaming pc and planning to buy an i7 4790K. So what i'm wondering is, if that is an overkill or..?

For most games the i5-4690K will perform identically. Unless you know for sure that you are playing a game with tons of threads, I suggest getting the i5-4690K instead to save some cash.
