Hey, I was wondering what would be a better option for me a Synology 2 Bay NAS for $130 : http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822108095

or an custom built NAS for $200:

I will be using the NAS primarily for local backup for media files, I may use it for Plex but I can always use my PC for that. So main thing is local backup. What do you guys suggest ?

Yea, $200 budget for a custom built NAS is pretty tight, couldn't do alot with it.

Just realized it does support raid but the CPU is pretty slow. This is good build also you won't be able to run FreeNAS as it requires a lot of RAM but Linux with Samba would work.

Ahh, I see but what would be the advantage of this custom NAS, compared to the prebuilt one ?

Being able to have a ton of different programs and/or types of servers on it and also use it as an HTPC.
