Hi everyone,

i just finished my first pc build and I was trying to run it. It powered on for couple seconds, and turn off, and repeat.

Is my mobo broken?

I tested the PSU using paperclip and case fans, the case fans run but the psu fan doesn't.

I checked the connection between reset/power, it looks fine.

I try both of the rams I have with the slots, same thing happens.

I tried taking off the GPU, still getting the same thing.

I did plug in both 24 pins and 8 pins connecter, the connection is as tight as I could do.

Thanks in advance for any help.

MOBO: MSI z-97 gaming 5

Cooler: NH-d14

PSU: Corsair HX-750

GPU: EVGA GTX 780 dual classy

RAM: Kingston Fury 2x8GB

HDD: WD blue 1TB

SSD: Samsung 840 EVO

Hi, thanks for the reply. I tried and I still get the same thing

Positive you're not using the wrong pins? The mobo might be going into over/undervolt protection. Is it set to the right voltage? Do you have another power supply you can test?

Wrong pin as in pin for powering up? No. And I do not have another PSU to test, how do I check/set the voltage?

Thanks!

Darn, that would find out if it's just the PSU. And since Corsair loves to make things automatic you can't check if it's switching to the right voltage. Usually there's a switch at the back to go between 115 and 230.

I think it's either your motherboard or your cpu that's causing it to not boot.

I tried several things and I ran into something interesting. I unplugged the 8-pin connector from the mobo, I got exactly same problem I have been having. Is it possible that the cable for 8-pin connector is broken?

Thanks, again, for your help.

It's a possibility. Do the pins inside look broken?

I don't see any. I tested the psu with multi meter, all channels output a little over 12V. Which seems fine since that's what supposed to go into the mobo. But I still don't understand why plugging it in and unplugging it makes no difference though, it might be the pins in mobo get shorted to ground.

Thanks!

Is it mounted to the standoffs properly? Any (if there are any) I/O grounding tabs inside of something they're not supposed to be in?

I used NZXT H440 which comes with pre-mounted standoffs, so I think it should be fine. I'm not sure what are I/O grounding tabs, could you explain it a little bit so I can check? Thanks so much, you're awesome.

Pretty sure if you jump the green and black wire on the 24 pin the psu fan should spin.

Hi, I'm not sure if it's a new corsair's feature where it doesn't turn the fan on when the PSU is not under load or not, but I connected it to the case fans and they spins normally. Any guest?

Thank!

Only awesome if I can actually fix it. :P Grounding tabs on the I/O should look like this:

case-shield.jpg

The shouldn't be inside any ports.

And on Corsair's power supplies they don't turn the fan on until I think 20% load? Maybe 50%... Dunno.

I don't see such thing behind my case, I am taking the motherboard out to run it outside the case. Hopefully something happens.

I checked the 8 pins connector with the beep function in multi-meter (the one that beeps when ground and V+ are shorted), it seems to be fine.

If it still doesn't work it's probably the power supply not working right.

If it still doesn't end up working you can start to RMA things and see if a new part will fix it.

I think that's the last way. I don't know what to return though. I don't even know what's not working and what is.

Anyway, thanks so much for your help. I appreciate it.

I'd start with the power supply, the motherboard, then cpu if it's still not working.

The chances that both ram sticks are dead is so slim it can't really be it.
