First ever build

Hey guys, im looking into building my first ever rig and need some advice/suggestions on picking the parts. On a budget of around £1000 ($1700) just for the tower.

I don't require a power supply as in my current pre built system I have added a Corsair 700w GS700 which I will remove at put in my new build.

The aim of this build is for general use like surfing the internet and gaming. Nothing extreme like video editing or anything advanced like that.

I already have a monitor that I am happy at the moment but will be looking to upgrade sometime in the near future once i've got this new rig up and running for a few months.

I already have a gaming keyboard and mouse but I will be selling these to upgrade to better ones once i've got everything built. Only need a new mouse and keyboard not included in the main budget , seperate budget of no more than £150 ($256). I was looking for a mechanical keyboard (not sure which switches) and a new mouse (currently have a wireless RAT9 which I do still like and would keep if I had to but I think my old logitech mx1000 was a better mouse for my uses.

So far I have decided on the following

CPU: Intel i5 3690K

Case: Corsair 450D MID tower

Looking for 8gb of RAM (unless you would recommend more)

CPU cooler (air or all in one water)

Motherboard

GPU (GTX 770 or 780 or any of the AMD equivalents)

500gb SSD as my primary and only drive (have several external hard drives so wouldn't require a HDD)

Would really appreciate any suggestions and advice.

Many thanks.

Go with Corsair rams. 8gb should do fine for gamimg.

For cpu cooling, personally i would go with liquid with that kind of budget. And go for a 780.

And the CPU you mean i7 right?

No I mean i5, for my needs I wouldn't really benefit from an i7 and the money saved can go towards other components.

Both these look good, defintelly set on the case, CPU and now I think the SSD also as the Samsung 840 EVO 500gb seems perfect for me.

I'm not sure whether to go for an air cooler or liquid on the CPU (i've never seriously over clocked anything before but might be interested in doing it in the future) hence the K CPU

I'd prefer a rather quiet cpu cooler if possible, heard good things about the CM hyper and Noctua.

Also I forgot to mention I game at 1080p on one display but may look into 1440p if monitor prices drop in the future.

How does the 780 compare against the 290 with its 4gb of VRAM?

I wouldn't get water cooling unless it's a H100i which is bloody expensive.

Would I be limited with CPU cooler height? or does that case allow for plenty of room?

I did like the look of the H100i and I agree it is expensive but seems very simple but then again if im not going to major overlclock i won't need such a good cpu cooler :P

About the same in 1080p. 290 around 5fps better in 1440p, but still won't see anything because 60hz.

Is it not worth choosing AMD over NVIDIA then or would you say NVIDIA has better driver support and features? Plus the extra 1gb vram over the 780 if I go for 290.

I currently have a GTX 560 and can't complain about drivers or NVIDIA software.

My Build so Far any input would be appreciated.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor

Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 780 3GB DirectCU II Video Card

Case: Corsair 450D ATX Mid Tower Case

Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer

Need to decide on a motherboard and cpu cooler.

Also as a big lover of windows 7 is it worth upgrading to 8.1 or sticking to 7.
