The internet speed on my computer usually slows down when there are many devices using the wifi but is fine when wifi is turned off on these devices. Is there any way to improve my internet so that I don't have to turn wifi off on these devices? Do I buy a new router because my router is pretty old and if so which routers are best in each price range? And how do I replace the router? I don't know much about networking.

Devices: 1 laptop, 4 phones and 2 comps

Router: TP-Link TL-WR340G 54M Wireless Router

Modem: SB5101 SURFboard Cable Modem

Thanks

thats because the devices are always checking for emails/texts/updates/FB status updates. things like that. but a new router if you can, but most importantly, make sure you physical internet is fast enough.

So how do I add more bandwidth?

You pay your ISP more, to give you less shitty internet. What is your current internet speeds?

You can test it here: http://www.speedtest.net/

Do a speedtest of your internet connection. If it is sufficiently fast, then I think your router is too slow itself to handle the number of wireless clients. Get a better router in that case.

ok thanks I'll find a router with QoS feature. Is there anything else I need to look for when searching for a router?

Some routers use criteria such as ports and services or a gaming setting for QoS, but it would be easiest to set the local IP of your desktop to be the priority. Look for a router with this configuration.

Besides other features that might benefit your network such as Dual band Wi-FI or network storage, find out which wireless standard the devices that will be using your wireless network support. Wireless 802.11 AC is the fastest wireless standard, but keep in mind if one device has a slower standard it will bottleneck the whole wireless network.

G < N < AC

This is pretty standard, also, you didnt mention how far away you are from the router regardless about all the devices that are being used.

Sometimes you could be very far away and still get good signal, but the moment other devices connect, you can get a slow connection.

If you are a bit far away from the router, get a repeated or you can just buy a long ethernet cable to get a better more stable connection.
