The only silent graphics cards are fanless ones and some AMD cards that run so cool that you can turn off the fan with software like Msi Afterburner.

Black Friday is a long, long time from now--look later if you plan to buy then.

reference card r9 290 from asus !

noo lol just kidding try the sapphire edition of the 290

Sapphire trix 290 is very quiet too much quieter than other 780s or 770s so if you can afford it go for it otherwise you cant go wrong with the asus 280x.

R9 290 TRI-X IS LOVE R9 290 TRI-X IS LIFE<3

Asus DirectCU II, MSI Twinfrozr, Gigabyte windforce. All of those will be near silent in a Define R4. From personal experience the DirectCU II is a bit quieter than the windforce cooler and i've never owned a twin frozr card but from reviews they are about the same as asus.

I'm going to stay away from sapphire cards for a bit because the fans on them are absolute shit and are prone to failure. My friend has a Dual-X sapphire 7970 and at first one of the fans was getting louder and louder over time until he RMA'd it. 5 months after the RMA one fan is wiggling and hitting against the shroud and the other has the same problem with it being loud. I feel bad because i'm the one that recommended him that card. I googled it and apparently a lot of other people have the same problems.

Anyway as for the actual GPU i'd probably try to snag a R9 290 when on sale as long as it has a decent cooler.

I really like the way MSI looks, but I've heard of leaking mineral oil... asus also seems that the card gets really hot.

Leaking mineral oil from what? O.o

Also Asus put the same DirectCU II cooler from the GTX 780 onto the R9 290 so the temps were bad (not as bad as stock) because the GPU die sizes were different. I remember hearing somewhere that they fixed that but you'd have to look into it.

So in terms of how quiet you want your system to be you might want to consider an NZXT G10 and a pre-filled liquid cooler.
I remember Tek Syndicate, specifically Windell testing out the G10 with an X40 cooler and it actually generated less noise than the case fans.
So that's the way to go for total silence.

Tom's also came to the same conclusion, the G10 + X40 was inaudible.

Some of the coolers out there like the Sapphire Vapor-X are also virtually silent. But the 290 Vapor-X is a full $100 more expensive than other 290s. There's also the tri-x which is more affordable and is probably the second best option.

There is also the Vapor-X 280X which is far more reasonably priced than the 290 Vapor-X and is just as quiet & cool.

Well, from personal experience the EVGA ACX cooler is always audible in my define R4, but so is every air cooler. What the EVGA ACX does have going for it is it never really gets much louder than idle. I can't hear much of a difference between 30% and %70, and since the cooler is strong you can always set a custom fan curse to make it go lower so it is even more quiet.

Previous cards I've owned included the ACX cooler, Twin Frozr, Arctic Accelero Xtreme, Stock blower, PCS+... and all were audible under load except for the aftermarket accelero.

I currently am using an Asus directCUii R9 290, and the default fan profile is dead quiet, but I adjusted it's fan profile slightly so under full load I can faintly hear it.

In order of best to worst in my own experience for both sound and performance (oddly enough):

Accelero (aftermarket and expensive), comparible I would guess to any 3 fan cooler.

DirectCUii

PCS+

ACX

Twin Frozr
