Hi guys,

I was wondering if you could help me with a problem. I am trying to get Windows Updates to work again on a Windows 7 machine after it stopped in the middle of May.

The error code is 80072EFE.

I have tried the following:

- Delete all downloaded updates from SoftwareDistribution folder and retry.

- Run Kaspersky TDSS Killer.

- Restart all services related to Windows Updates.

- Ipconfig /flushdns

- Clear update flags in registry.

- Run Microsoft FixIt for Windows Updates

- Clear CatRoot2 folder

I still can't seem to get past this error. Any help would be appreciated.

well it seems you have tried all possible solutions you can find and it still not helping

guess the last resort is to fresh install the OS

backup your important data and settings and do the re-install

I wish it was as simple as that. It is one of my client's machines that they use as a workstation server, so I would prefer not to go down that road if it is not absolutely the only choice I have.

found this on TN:

"I had the same problem a short while ago. Error code 80072EFE or 80072EE2 kept showing up when I tried to find new updates. Messenger was also blacked out. After testing almost every possible MacGyver-solution given in various tech forums and never getting any positive results, I went and bought a new ethernet adapter. Man, should have tried that first.

No software tweak can fix a faulty hardware."

Also this:

Windows Update error 80072efe or 80072f76

Applies to Windows 7

If you receive Windows Update error 80072efe or 80072f76 while checking for updates, it might be caused by a connection interruption between your computer and the Windows Update servers. Close Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then run Windows Update again. You can also wait for Windows Update to run at its next scheduled time.

If you still receive one of these errors, you can run the Windows Update Troubleshooter that will automatically find and fix some common problems with Windows Update.

If the troubleshooter didn't help, verify that you have an Internet connection. For more information about Internet connection problems, see Why can’t I connect to the Internet?

If you still receive this error after checking your Internet connection, it might mean that a program running on your computer is preventing Windows Update Services from accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include firewalls, antispyware software, web accelerators, Internet security or antivirus programs, or proxy servers.

For steps you can take to fix this problem, see the connection-related update errors article on the Microsoft website.

If you continue to see this error, go to the Microsoft Answers website for more assistance.

Error codes this applies to:

  • WindowsUpdate_80072efe

  • 0x80072efe

  • WindowsUpdate_80072f76

  • 0x80072f76

and also try this:

1) Perform clean boot (Check the link for performing clean boot).

2) Enable half of the services.

3) Determine whether the problem returns.

4) Enable half of the startup items.

5) Determine whether the problem returns.

 6) Repeat the above steps until you find out which service or program is causing the issue

From my perspective it looks like something is blocking it, on the network, firewall virus software etc. Windows firewall causes many weird/annoying problems.

Make sure it is not you're NIC og wires that is faulty.

Have you tried to turn firewalls of?

Any new hardware in the Network, since last windows update?

Have somthing else been updated hardware/software, since last windows update?

Do you have static or dynamic ip address?

tracert in CMD? (this will not always work)

Tried tracing with wireshark?

http://www.wireshark.org/download.html  < download link for wire shark. at least you know if it's in the network you should troubleshoot.
