How big a hit? The slightly used gpu market

ManBehrPig

Hi,

Was just curious, where would I most likely get the best price for a 4 mo old, as of yet lightly used one of these? http://www.amazon.com/Thermal-Direct-GPU-Contact-Graphics-GTX780-DC2OC-3GD5/dp/B00DWV3NM6/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1404706775&sr=1-1&keywords=asus+gtx+780

And how much of a hit am I likely to take on the deal? For a couple of reasons I'm thinking of upgrading to th 6GB version now that it is out. What affects the price? Would I be better off just holding on to what I have? How big a problem will the VRAM be a year or two down the line?

What resolution do you play at and what sort of games? Are you actually maxing out the 3GB?

Keep your 3GB card and spend you upgrade dollars when 800 series come out would be my advice.

If you bought a new series of GPU resently, you should be able to get around 80% of your money back.

read that wrong damn it :( sorry about that.

Ok maybe i didnt, im confused :(

If it wasn't abused it'll still work fine. Since it is used though at least 70-80% of the price for selling. 3 GB will last a few years depending on the resolution you're gaming at.

I didn't quite understand the first question? and probably the second one either :(

If you're planning on 4K with more than one monitor in the next 1-2 years then it'll be a huge factor for buying a graphics card with more vram.

I'd say that 3GB is just hitting the limits of 2.5K gaming and 4K gaming. I would only buy the 780 6GB vram model if I were to go 4K right of the bat with more than 1 card.

Right now 1080p but looking at 1440p. As far as I can tell I'm not maxing out and the games the would are limited right now but I thin part of it was I was hoping to future proof a little. A much as I dislike the term.

More than anything, whether I upgrade now or later is less important to me. More than anything I'm trying to get a grip on the gpu secondary market. I'm still new to being an "enthusiast" and I've never tried to resell a computer part.

Stick with what you have, you should be fine at 1440p. If you wanted to go 4K then it may be worth the upgrade but then again you'll probably need 2.

If a PC compnent is still in the range of the PC components that are popular on the market at the time, then you should be able to make most of your money back by resaling the GPU ( around 80% of your money back atleast), but the older and more outdated the part becomes the more money you will loose on your investment.
