AMD of Intel?

Oh wow. Yea ok that changes things.

Agreed. The combo deals they have with the G3258 and mobo's are kind of amazing. For pure gaming, nothing beats that.

It pretty much just lets you save quite a bit so you can get a beastly GPU (obviously not too beastly to bottleneck it but still)

Tell us specifically what this computer is going to be used for please.

My dad is going to use the computer for Altium Designer, programming applications and building linux distributions.

There is no PC gaming involved.

I hope this will help you guys a little :)

Please tell me what you guys think

Board has onboard so you can get rid of the 5450. But I wouldn't use a 125W 8 core on that motherboard.

If it's used for designing, compiling programs/distros then I'd assume it'd be under load and that board just can't handle that kind of load consistently. I believe they are all multithreaded tasks so the FX is a good choice on a budget. You also missed storage and are spending too much on a gaudy looking case (I wouldn't give that to my Dad personally).

Try a FX8320, but buy something like the M5A97 R2.0 / 970UD3P (I think MSI also came to market with a 970 'gaming' board recently that's supposed to be quite good- not sure on price in USA though).

You'll need a dedicated 5450 with those boards though.

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor  ($149.98 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Kingston Blu 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($75.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Crucial M500 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($71.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: MSI Radeon HD 5450 1GB Video Card  ($29.98 @ OutletPC)
Total: $497.89
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

This is probably the best value you will get. If needed add a 1TB drive.
