Hello, In the next few weeks ill be purchasing my computer to use for my extended stay in Canada. I plan on heavy gaming with some Light-Moderate picture and video editing. I'm asking the forum if my current selection of parts is optimal or if i should change things around, My budget is around $600 CAD willing to stretch it if it proves to be worth it.

Current:

Intel Xeon 1230v3

Asus z97m-plus Micro atx

TridentX 16gb (2x8Gb) 1866 8-9-9-24

I do also plan on Water cooling the rig if it helps with any decisions

Looks good to me, I have a friend running that cpu and it has great performance.

Do you want to do a closed loop or just the cpu?

If you just want to liquid cool the cpu you could always get a h100i. There are some noctua air coolers around the same price that preform just as well.

cant overclock a xeon so a z97 board is pointless.

2x8gb of ram is useless (unless your doing really heavy video work in which case you should be on 2011) aswell, get 2x4gb

Thanks for the speedy replies,

Should have mentioned that i realize that WC a xeon is not optimal but i am doing the custom loop for the look rather than performance gain, also to try something new.

Go with the E3-1231 v3 it's newer. Also, no point in watercooling a locked chip, complete waste of money!

Thanks for pointing out the 1231 i am able to pick up just the chip off amazon for 250 saving some moolah in the process.

Can u recommend a board to replace the Z97, also if later down the track i moved into heavier video editing, correct me if im wrong but i thought you cannot buy another 2x4 kit to boost your ram as dual channel kits cannot run in quad, so i would then just have to "throw out" my ram?

Also i had planned on OC my GPU would a different motherboard have an effect on this?

Please do not watercool a locked chip. There is no point in doing it at all. There is nothing "cool" about watercooling a locked chip. There are no aesthetic advantages of watercooling a locked chip other than someone looking at you like you have 14 heads.

It's probably the worse computer decision you can ever make in your life.

cant really say about a better board because i use amd (I go for bang/buck, ill take a possible 5% hit in perfomance instead of a 60% hit in the wallet)

you can still add another 2x4gb sticks later if you need to (which is a looooong way off).

dual channel is A,A,B,B so as you do the 1st+3rd of the slots or 2nd+4th you have 1 in 1 channel and 1 in the other (1 in channel A and 1 in channel B)

if you later add in 2 sticks youll have 2 sticks in channel A and 2 sticks in channel B which is no different than having bigger sticks, just means you cant get 32gb later on because you'll be out of slots...but are you likely to need 32gb of ram in 10 years? are you not going to have a new pc in 10 years anyway?

4gb is enough for gaming now (2gb for windows)

8gb is best for gaming AND rendering etc.

16gb is used by people on 2011 though im guessing most of the performance comes from quad channel instead of the extra ram, google is your friend
