Hi my friend has a 120hz monitor and he rarely needs to use v sync in games unlike myself. Is this due to the display or other factors?

Im not a expert, but im sure someone can confirm this. screen tearing occurs when you run a high FPS then your monitor can display. so if the display can handle 120 frames, versus 60 frames, your computer would need twice the power before it starts tearing one the 120hz monitor

I'm not an expert but refresh rate does fix screen tearing.

If you're going over your monitor's refresh rate a lot, it can cause a lot of tearing. V-Sync fixes this to an extent, but also increases input lag and can cause problems when you drop below your monitor's refresh rate. Having a higher refresh rate will remove the need to use V-Sync (unless you're still going over it) and will get rid of the tearing.

But how can that be true if I lock my frame rate to 60 using say precision x I still get tearing?

i do not know how frame limiting works but unless the monitor syncs with the gpu, the rendering and scanning will always be asynchronous and hence tearing. unless ofcourse, frame limiting works similar to vsync in which case it wont tear but could introduce lag or stutter when frametimes shoot up.

this is my guess. so, i'm not 100% sure

BTW, i have a 120hz monitor and i do have tearing. How much more that is over a 60hz monitor, i cannot say.
