[WINE] Program doesn't start (SideSync)

StingBull

Keep in mind I'm a noob. I'm trying to run a Windows software called SideSync from Samsung on my Elementary OS computer. It installed fine but it doesn't run. No error, no nothing it just doesn't run. If I try the terminal with "wine sidesync" it gives me these errors. I have no idea what any of these means, what am I missing?

This is just a hunch, but have you tried:

Wine SideSync.exe

Is sidesync located in c:\windows\system32\sidesync.exe and not somewhere else? Have you set up mapping? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1516693

That was a quick search, I recommend looking up the user manual from winehq. You need to make sure your drive is mapped (not to an actual windows install) before you install the application, otherwise the default install location won't exist.

I always guarantee that no more than 50% of what I say is useful.

Actually I have managed to launch the program. Turns out I wasn't using the latest Wine. But while the program launches it doesn't actually function. What this program suppose to do is to mirror the phone's screen to the PC and allow the PC's mouse and keyboard control it. There two ways of connecting it, via Wi-Fi or via USB. But it seems the neither works. The program doesn't even detect that the Wi-Fi is on and USB is also not detected. I have installed the necessary Windows Samsung USB driviers with Wine also but it doesn't work.

Do I have to launch the drivers in some way, I don't know.

Would a VNC server/app solve what you're trying to do? Here's one native for linux http://www.realvnc.com/download/vnc/

And here's some apps for android (some are only clients, some are only servers, some are... both!) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=vnc&c=apps&hl=en

I used that to setup a android tv that he could control from his phone and vice versa. He didn't like teamviewer because it goes through their servers, and he was just using it on his LAN.

VNC, like TeamViewer allows me to control my PC from my phone but I don't need that. What I need is the opposite.

Control my phone with my PC. There some Android applications that do that but not many that don't require root. I'll look around more and try to get SideSync to work as well since that one is and works better than third party solutions since it is made by Samsung.

What I'm saying is we got it both ways around, maybe because they were both on android, but there must be a linux application that does the same. You would run the VNC server app on the phone, and vnc viewer on linux if you want to control the phone from linux.

This is the app we used for the server https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.onaips.vnc&hl=en

Warning: it will crash the device (well it crashed his) if you click the restart server button.

Install that on your phone, and run it.

Install Real VNC Viewer for linux https://www.realvnc.com/download/viewer/

That will allow you to control the phone from linux, just make sure you type correct IP and port.

If you want it to go both ways though, you need to instal realvnc on linux as well, and vnc viewer on your phone.

I just didnt want to say "use those or else" those are just the apps that worked for him. Other than the crashing when trying to restart the server app on the phone.

Droid vnc server does need root (I didnt realise that) but there MUST be one out there. I will try to find one for you.

edit: here is one VMLite VNC Server app for android, but it is $10. I still think there has to be a free one lurking, but I'm an iOS guy... I'm sure it can be done. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vmlite.vncserver&hl=en

edit2: (sorry, I don't want to be called out for spamming in the forum) check out this link, it talks about controlling samsung devices (but only samsung... maybe thats why sidesync isnt working? or are you using a samsung phone?) via teamviewer with something called quicksupport app. And it lists the other two app methods as well. http://blog.g4team.com/?p=5889

Yes, I am using a Samsung phone. Thank you for all of that. I'll see what I can do with them.
