i had to send my laptop into HP to some repairs and i cloned the laptop in case they loaded a new OS on it so i would keep all my stuff and there would be no chance of losing something. now i have my laptop back and i cant access my desktop on the external and i can only get access to it on the wireless network. i would transfer everything that way but i have 300GBs+ of stuff to move and it will take forever.

if you could please help i would be grateful

Laptop is a HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC

the external is a WD my passport 1TB

Hi omzz15, sorry to hear about the problem you're facing.  Just to share with you my opinions on this issue. Here are some steps for your references:

1) Is the drivers have been installed? you may check it from Device Manager. You can refer to here on how to open Device Manager.
e.g (Window 7)
 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/open-device-manager#1TC=windows-7

2) If it's not, update the drivers. In the hardware list, double-click the device you want to update, then click the Driver tab, click Update Driver and then follow the instructions. For more details, you can refer to this link.
 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/update-driver-hardware-isnt-working-properly#update-driver-hardware-isnt-working-properly=windows-7.

3) Try different USB port on your laptop.

4) If the problem persist, check setting in BIOS for USB is enabled or disabled.

Hope this can help to solve your issue.

Does anything show up when you plug in the external HDD?

Is the HDD USB3.0? If so, find the USB3.0 drivers for your HP-laptop
