Hello, I am planning my first gaming pc build soon and am very torn on what gpu to put in my system. I am mostly planning on playing star citizen but I mostly want a pc that is capable of playing most games well.

My current planned build:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/683rYJ

Basically asus r9 290x vs asus gtx 780? Any other ideas are welcome as well but I really want to stay around that price range.

The 290x performs more like the 780 Ti than the 780.

Passmark is a synthetic benchmark. It's only relevant if what you're doing is running passmark all day.

If what you're doing is gaming, look at gaming benchmarks.

I'm going to be building my first gaming pc pretty soon and I am torn between the 2. My current setup idea is http://pcpartpicker.com/p/c7CNgs
(I'm open to other changes on the build too)
I'm confused because on passmarks the 780 scores 8044 and the 290x only scores 6797 but everyone says that the 290x is more along the lines of a 780ti..?

Don't make duplicate threads. I'm merging them.

You're spending $80 something dollars on 1600MHz memory, why not grab some 2400MHz for the same price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231585&cm_re=2400_G.Skill-_-20-231-585-_-Product

Also, the XFX Core Ed Pro 650 is a much better unit than the Hive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207014&cm_re=XFX_Core_PSU-_-17-207-014-_-Product

Sorry, I'm new to forums..

Thanks a lot for the help guys!

Now would it be worth the extra $ for the 780ti?

No. The 780 Ti and 290x are generally a bad value. Stick with the 780/290 unless you really just have money to blow.

You can get 780Ti performance with a 290X. So 290X over the 780Ti since it is cheaper. But the 290 is a better deal overall.

Ok, so my best bet would be to go with the 290 and then (if my cpu can do it) "sli" with another one in the future? (Obviously with a larger psu)

yea pretty much that

get the 290 first and later crossfire with another 290

note you will need a 850 watt PSU

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.
